Morrisville wraps up first half of season with 3-1 loss to Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's team wrapped up the first half of the season on the road at SUNY Cortland Tuesday night, playing to a 3-1 NEWHL final on the Red Dragons home ice in Cortland.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville women's hockey played to a X-X NEWHL final Tuesday night against host SUNY Cortland, wrapping up the first half of the season with the league battle before the holiday break.
  • Morrisville took a 1-0 lead over the hosts late in the first period, carrying the one goal advantage into the first intermission.
  • Rhys Brown (Kemptville, Ont.) started the sequence for the Mustangs with an interception in the defensive zone, before preventing Cortland from clearing puck on the opposite end of the ice.
  • Brown converted the opportunity with the scoring wrist shot between the circles in the offensive zone for the 1-0 lead late in first after Allie Davidson (Rockford, Ill.) chipped the puck back to the waiting and wide-open Brown.
  • Cortland was able to tie it up in the second after chipping the rebound over the blocker of Morrisville netminder Maggie Jones (Marystown, N.L.) midway through second.
  • The hosts jumped out in front early in the third after gathering the loose puck in the neutral zone and carrying it down the left wing for the scoring wrist shot past Jones 3:20 into the period.
  • Cortland extended the lead to two moments later, taking advantage of a Morrisville high stick penalty, collecting the power play goal with the slap from the right wing.
  • Cortland limited Morrisville's opportunities for the remainder of the period, maintaining pressure on the Mustangs defense, earning the win.
  • Jones finished with 31 saves on the night, as Cortland finished with the slight 34-25 edge in shots on goal over the Mustangs.

  • Morrisville will resume action January 2 as they host Alvernia to kick off the remainder of the season following the holiday break.
