WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville women's hockey picked up a 3-2 non-conference win Monday afternoon over visiting Alvernia College to open the 2023 year on the Mustangs home ice in Morrisville.
  • Three posted goals for the Mustangs in the win, including Kendra Johnston (St. Albert, Alta.) who registered two points behind one goal and an assist.
  • Morrisville was the first to strike, posting their first tally of the new year at the 13:58 mark as Johnston crossed the puck from the right wing to a waiting Emily Olson (Lloydminster, Alta.) who was wide open on the left post for the one-timer.
  • Emma Thompson (Ingleside, Ont.) added to the lead with her slap from the left point just over a minute later for the 2-0 Morrisville advantage.
  • Hailee Easson (Okotoks, Alta.) chipped the face-off to Kate Mabey (Guelph, Ont.) on the blue who crossed the puck to the left to a wide-open Thompson for the scoring slap shot.
  • Morrisville maintained a 2-0 lead until the 10:43 mark of the second when Alvernia was able to sneak one past Emma Plett (Grunthal, Man.) to cut the lead to one on the rebound.
  • Johnston, though, would regain the two-goal advantage for the Mustangs with the eventual game winner, skating the length of the ice and chipping the puck over the blocker of the Golden Wolves netminder for the score at the 17:08 mark.
  • Alvernia again cut the lead to one midway through the third with a second scoring tally off the rebound and attempted to even the contest in the final two minutes with the extra skater after pulling Julia Beaven from net, but the Mustangs defense were able to hold on for the win to open 2023.
  • Plett finished with 24 saves for the Mustangs in the victory, posting 13 in the third period to secure the win.
  • Beaven finished with 39 stops in the loss as Morrisville outshot Alvernia 42-26 on the afternoon.
