Creenan has record night, but late score lifts no. 12 Plattsburgh over Mustang men

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's hockey team battled back from a three-goal deficit but was unable to overcome the no. 12 ranked Plattsburgh State Cardinals as the hosts posted a late score to capture the SUNYAC win over the visiting Mustangs on the Cardinals home ice in Plattsburgh, despite a record setting night from sophomore netminder Ryan Creenan (Colonia, N.J.).

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville men's hockey rallied for three goals after falling behind 3-0 to the host Plattsburgh State Cardinals Saturday night but couldn't compete the comeback attempt as a late score gave the hosts the 4-3 SUNYAC win in Plattsburgh.
  • Plattsburgh held the 66-19 advantage in shots but were stopped short for a majority of the contest as Ryan Creenan (Colonia, N.J.) posted 62 saves in the effort in net, including a 24 first period total.
  • Creenan's totals in net set a new single game saves mark for the Mustangs in all-time history.
  • The Cardinals, ranked no. 12 in the latest USCHO.com Division III poll, took a 3-0 lead after netting one in the opening period and adding two additional tallies in early on in the second for the -30 advantage
  • Morrisville put their first on the board at the 7:38 mark of the second with a scoring strike from Trevor Neumann (Burlington, Ont.) with the wrist score over the glove of the Cardinals netminder.
  • Benjamin Lindberg (East Aurora, N.Y.) poked the puck to Cameron Clark (Daytona Beach, Fla.) who centered the short pass to Neumann for the score.
  • The Mustangs made it a one goal game just a minute into the third period with a rebound tally from Jestin Somero (New Ipswich, N.H.) through the five-hole off the initial shot from Chris Mott (Nesconset, N.Y.).
  • Curtis Abbott (Belmont, Ont.) was also credited with an assist on the play after chipping the puck to Mott.
  • Morrisville pulled even at 10:38 of the third with a second score from Neumann, who went under the Cardinals blocker for the goal, after receiving the puck from Trevor Grasby (Holland Landing, Ont.) who intercepted the clearing attempt by the hosts.
  • Plattsburgh was able to get the final chirp, breaking the three-goal deadlock with the eventual game winner in the final minute of play.
  • Morrisville pulled Creenan for the extra skater after winning the ensuing faceoff, but the Mustangs were only able to get one shot off in the final minute as Plattsburgh collected the league win.

  • Morrisville will return to the ice January 6 after the short holiday break, hosting Post University in a 7 p.m. contest on the Mustangs home ice.
