Morrisville unable to tame Red Dragons in SUNYAC comeback

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's hockey team held a 3-2 lead over visiting SUNY Cortland Wednesday evening, but was unable to withhold a feisty Red Dragon blitz as the visitors captured the SUNYAC win in extra time on the Mustangs ice by a 4-3 final score.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Morrisville 3, Cortland 4 - OT
  • Location: Morrisville IcePlex, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 3-5-0, 1-4-0 SUNYAC; Cortland 5-3-1, 4-2-0 SUNYAC

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville went back and forth with visiting SUNY Cortland Wednesday night, forcing the Red Dragons into the corner, but it was the visitors that escaped with a 4-3 overtime win in SUNYAC play on the Mustangs home ice in Morrisville.
  • Playing 4-on-4 after penalties that occurred within a minute of one another, Cortland opened up the nights scoring with the first tally of the contest at the 16:12 mark of the first with a breakaway down the right side of the ice.
  • Morrisville was able to capitalize on the Cortland hooking penalty just over a minute later as the Mustangs worked the puck from the left wing to right for a one-time slap by Curtis Abbott (Belmont, Ont.) for the power play score.
  • Chris Mott (Nesconset, N.Y.) worked the puck to the left wing to Jestin Somero (New Ipswich, N.H.) who used Mott again to shift the puck to the right to a wide open Abbott for the score at the 17:24 mark of the first.
  • Morrisville took a 2-1 lead six minutes into the second period off the stick of a breaking Cameron Clark (Daytona Beach, Fla.) down the left side of the ice.
  • Domenic Della Civita (Trenton, Ont.) gathered the puck in the Mustangs defensive zone and shifted it left to Trevor Grasby (Holland Landing, Ont.) who found Clark with the advantage on the left wing.
  • Clark completed the scoring play with a wrist shot over the left side of the Cortland netminder for the goal.
  • The Mustang lead was short-lived, however, as Cortland countered with a tally of their own just over a minute later to pull the contest even for a second time.
  • Morrisville had a persistent attack on net in the third and was able to break through at the 10:16 mark as Abbott tallied his second of the night, giving the hosts the 3-2 advantage.
  • Mott connected with Somero who's shot went wide of the net before Abbott collected the loose puck for the rifle from the left circle and Mustang lead.
  • Cortland pulled netminder Luca Durante for the extra skater with 19 seconds to go, and following a faceoff win shifted the puck to the right side of the zone where they hit the tying score off the shot from the blue to send the contest into extra time.
  • Cortland gained possession off the overtime faceoff and was able to get off four shots before capitalizing on the game winner 2:58 in.
  • Durante picked up the win with 22 stops across the night for the Red Dragons.
  • Ryan Creenan (Colonia, N.J.) registered 33 in the loss between the pipes for Morrisville.

WHAT'S NEXT:
