Morrisville drops heartbreaker to no. 14 Utica

UTICA, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's hockey team gave the hosts a scare Tuesday night, as they battled down to the final minute with USCHO no. 14 ranked Utica University before falling in a heartbreaking 3-2 cross down decision to the Pioneers at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville women's hockey dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to no. 14 ranked Utica University Tuesday night, battling through the final minute in the crosstown match on the Pioneers home ice in Utica.
  • Morrisville shocked the Pioneers with a first period tally off the stick of Emily Olson (Lloydminster, Alta.) who picked up her first collegiate tally off the feed from Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) and Kate Mabey (Guelph, Ont.) for the 1-0 lead at the 10:07 mark.
  • Utica, unable to get one past Mustang netminder Maggie Jones (Marystown, N.L.) for the remainder of the period, headed into the first intermission trailing 1-0.
  • The Pioneers were able to counter the Mustangs score at the 13:36 mark of the second with a short-handed tally to tie the contest at one and took their first lead early in the third with an even strength score for the 2-1 lead three minutes into the final period.
  • Just over a minute later, however, Morrisville stunned the hosts netting an equalizing score with an unassisted goal from Kendra Johnston (St. Albert, Alta.) to tie it at two apiece.
  • Seconds after being whistled for an interference penalty, Utica intercepted the puck and was able to post their second short-handed score of the night, this time for a 3-2 advantage that withstood the clock and a persistent Mustang attack.
  • In a final attempt to tie the contest up for a third time, Morrisville forced Utica's netminder to make seven stops down the stretch, including one rifled towards the upper corner of the net from Allicen Bouchard (Rockford, Ill.).
  • Jones finished with 30 saves across the contest in the loss.
  • Angela Hawthorne registered 34, 12 in the final period for the win for Utica, as Morrisville held the slight advantage in shots 36-33 over the hosts.

  • Morrisville returns to the ice Friday at Cortland for a 7 p.m. puck drop in NEWHL play.
