Morrisville men run past Pioneers for win in Route 20 Classic match

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team opened the 2022 home schedule with a victory Friday night, toppling visiting Alfred State College by a 86-71 final in the second contest of the Route 20 Classic in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville picked up a 86-71 non-league win Friday night as they opened the home slate with the victory over Alfred State in the second of the Route 20 Classic contests hosted by the Mustangs.
  • Junior Shykell Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) led the Morrisville efforts with 18 points, adding five rebounds as three additional teammates posted double figures in the victory.
  • Tron Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Jordan Coard (Jamaica, N.Y.) each posted 17, Coard adding nine rebounds while Smith picked the Pioneers pocket six times, assisting four other scores.
  • Justin Sykes (Harlem, N.Y.) added a double-digit performance off the bench for Morrisville with his 11 points, collecting four boards.
  • Morrisville was able to take control of the Pioneers, dominating the lane with 50 points in the paint, including 22 that came off Alfred State miscues and 15 that were on the fast break.
  • The Mustangs led from the opening whistle with a quick layup from Coard in the paint and didn't look back as they ran out to a 13 point lead at the break.
  • Morrisville increased their lead to as many as 19 in the second half, but little by little the Pioneers chipped away, putting together a 12-0 run to make it a six point ball game with 6:27 to play.
  • Coard rallied the Mustangs with six straight points to regain the double-digit lead and Morrisville put together a 6-0 run to open the advantage to 17, sealing the win as the Pioneers ran out of time down the stretch.
  • Morrisville held the slight advantage from the floor, shooting 46.7% to the Pioneers 44.4%, but it was the turnover margin that proved the difference as the Mustangs forced 21 total miscues to their own nine.

  • Morrisville will meet SUNY ESF in a 1 p.m. tip at Cazenovia in the second of the Route 20 Classic action.
