Five net double figures in win for Morrisville men over Potsdam

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2022-23 season Saturday afternoon, with five netting double figures to lead the Mustangs past Potsdam in the consolation round of the Hilbert College Tip-Off Tournament in Hamburg.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville posted a come-from-behind victory Saturday afternoon over Potsdam in the consolation round of the Hilbert Tip-Off Tournament in Hamburg for a 99-89 win, their first of the 2022 season.
  • Morrisville had five post double figures on the afternoon including Bryce Arroyo (Bronx, N.Y.) who came off the bench to lead the Mustangs with 18 points.
  • Jordan Coard (Jamaica, N.Y.) added 17, missing the double double by one rebound as he collected nine, while teammate Shykell Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) chipped in 16.
  • Brown also had three assists while hitting 3-of-6 from beyond the arc for the Mustangs, earning All-Tournament honors.
  • Michael Litchfield (St. Albans, N.Y.) went 5-for-8 from long range en route to 15 points, also snagging six boards and assisting two.
  • Tron Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rounded out the Morrisville leader board with 11, assisting seven and collecting two steals.
  • Morrisville had a stellar shooting effort on the court across the afternoon, hitting 41.2% from downtown with 14 three's, while hitting 51.5% from the floor overall.
  • Both teams battled back and forth throughout the first half, taking advantage of their shooting game from long range, but it was an 8-2 spurt by the Bears that saw them take the lead heading into the break with a five point advantage.
  • Out of the gates, the Mustangs maintained momentum with a three from Litchfield to cut the lead to two and overwhelmed the Bears defensively to force three straight turnovers as Morrisville put together a 15-0 run to claim a 10-point lead just over four minutes in.
  • Potsdam was able to get back in the contest midway through, taking a one-point lead over Morrisville, but a three from Jayden Omernick (West Bend, Wisc.) saw the Mustangs with a 12-0 spurt, regaining their double-digit advantage.
  • The Bears attempted to get back in the contest, but the Mustangs took advantage of their ability at the free throw line and sealed the win down the stretch.
  • Morrisville collected 20 total points off Bear miscues in the second half alone, 24 total across the contest as they forced 17 Potsdam turnovers.

  • Morrisville will hit the road for a cross town matchup at Utica University on Tuesday, with opening tip scheduled for 7 p.m. in Utica.
