Morrisville men battle in heartbreaking loss to Chargers

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking loss to visiting Lancaster Bible College Friday night, battling the Chargers down the wire in an 87-85 United East loss in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville battled visiting Lancaster Bible College down to the final whistle Friday night in United East action, with the Chargers edging the Mustangs in an 87-85 final decision.
  • Three posted double-figures for Morrisville in the loss, including junior Tron Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who collected a team high 19.
  • Smith hit four from long range while adding five rebounds and two assists to his totals on the night in the Mustang efforts.
  • Jon Brennan (Irvington, N.Y.) posted a season high 18, hitting a clutch three down the stretch that brought the Mustangs within two of the Chargers.
  • Brennan dished out a Morrisville high six assists collecting four rebounds.
  • Michael Litchfield (St. Albans, N.Y.) was lights out for the Mustangs from beyond the arc, hitting 5-of-6 attempts for a total 17 points on the night.
  • Morrisville came out of the gates firing on all cylinders as they stunned the Chargers with a 47-38 halftime lead, out gunning Lancaster with a 7-for-9 three-point effort in the opening half and hitting 61.5% from the floor.
  • After an opening layup to give the hosts an 11-point lead, both teams battled back and forth until the Chargers capitalized on four straight scoring possessions to make it a one-point game with 14 showing on the clock.
  • Anthony Thomas (Wrightown, N.J.) netted a layup for the Mustangs to extend the lead to three, but Lancaster responded and went on a 13-0 run to shift the tables and gain a 10-point advantage over the hosts.
  • Smith broke up the scoring with a three-ball midway through the period, and the Mustangs continued to chip away at the Lancaster lead before a steal by Thomas with 28 seconds to go made it a one-possession game.
  • Tyler Hilton hit two free throws to extend the lead to five seconds later, but Brennan responded with a toss up from beyond the arc to bring the hosts within two with 13 remaining.
  • A last second effort by the Mustangs fell short as they dropped the heartbreaking league match.
  • Morrisville finished shooting 52.6% from the floor on the night, hitting 11-of-20 three's while collecting 17 second chance points.
