Cummings leads Morrisville field hockey to second straight win

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville field hockey team picked up their second straight win Tuesday evening as senior Heather Cummings (Akron, N.Y.) scored twice in the come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Houghton in Houghton.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville collected their second straight win Tuesday evening as they posted the 2-1 come-from-behind win over host Houghton College.
  • Both of the Mustang tallies came off the stick of senior Heather Cummings (Akron, N.Y.) within minutes of one another.
  • Camberly VanValkenburg (Walton, N.Y.) registered two assists and Makayla Haven (Richford, N.Y.) one in the win.
  • Morgan Dueber (Owego, N.Y.) made eight stops in the win in cage for Morrisville.
  • Houghton scored 8:46 into the contest and maintained the one goal lead for 40 minutes until the Mustangs offense broke through with the equalizer at the 49:13 mark.
  • VanValkenburg crossed the ball into the scoring circle from the left, connecting with Cummings for the backhanded shot.
  • Within minutes, Morrisville took advantage of a Highlander foul causing a penalty corner and put the go ahead tally into the back of the net at 51:52 as VanValkenburg sent the insert to Haven who crossed to Cummings for the scoring shot.
  • Houghton had a final attempt to tie the contest at two in the closing minutes, but the shot sailed wide of the target and Morrisville collected the non-conference win.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will have one final non-conference tune-up before opening State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play as they travel to Keystone College for a 7 p.m. contest. The Mustangs next outing will take place on Sept. 22 as they open league action against Oswego on Drake Field.
