WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • With three new starters from the 2019 conference championship squad, the Mustangs struggled to find their footing in the first set.
  • After falling behind 2-0, Emily Huppee (Austin, Tex.) picked up her first career kill to cut the lead in half.
  • Morrisville traded points with Poly, but still found themselves playing from behind.
  • Kayci Olson (Cortland, N.Y.) single handedly brought the Mustangs back within three as she picked up her first career kill, immediately followed by her first career ace.
  • From there the Mustangs slowly worked their way back into the set, forcing a Wildcat timeout at 21 all behind a strong serving effort by senior, Anna Salamino (Liverpool, N.Y.).
  • Unfortunately, Poly was able to pull away to take the tight first set win, 26-24.
  • The second set started with the Mustangs playing from behind once again until midway through the set when Isabella Wallace (Homer, N.Y.) took over with a strong serving effort to put Morrisville ahead 15-12.
  • SUNY Poly and Morrisville traded side outs for the remainder of the second set until a monster kill by Huppee pushed the advantage to Morrisville as they closed out the second set with a 25-18 win.
  • The Mustangs found their stride in the third set, jumping out to a 9-5 lead, picking up points through strong attacks, aces, and solid defensive play at the net.
  • The Wildcats tried to slow down the Mustangs, but back-to-back aces by Wallace completely shifted the momentum as Morrisville would close out the second set with another 25-18 win.
  • SUNY Poly did not go quietly, matching Morrisville point for point through the early part of the set.
  • However, the Mustangs put together a string of six straight points including three big kills in a row from the hand of Brianna Gates (Eagle, Colo.) to go up 15-9.
  • SUNY Poly called a time out with the Mustangs up 22-12, but nothing could deter the Mustangs as they picked up the 25-13 win in the fourth set to take the match 3 sets to 1.
  • Four Mustangs recorded double digit kills.  Gates led the way with 19, while Kirsten Florio (Wellsboro, Pa.) tallied 12, and Olson and Huppee ended with 11 and 10 respectively.
  • Hannah Taylor (Goshen, N.Y.) notched 47 assists in her first outing of 2021 to go along with four aces.
  • Salamino anchored the back row, picking up a team high 14 digs.  She also added a match high 5 aces.
