Morrisville women rally in 3-1 match win over Hartwick

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's volleyball team rallied from a one set deficit in the next three to claim the 3-1 match win over visiting Hartwick College Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Mustangs tournament in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • SUNY Morrisville rallied from the one set deficit in the first of the day's action, claiming a 3-1 match win over Hartwick as they took their home court for the first time this season.
  • For the second time in as many matches, Morrisville's Brianna Gates (Eagle, Colo.) posted double-digit kills, throwing down a match high 21, while serving up an ace and contributing 12 digs to the team totals.
  • Kirsten Florio (Wellsboro, Pa.) also notched double-figures, collecting 13 kills at the net from her middle hitter position, while registering five digs defensively.
  • Emily Huppee (Liberty Hill, Tex.) added to the Mustangs success at the net with her 12-kill performance across four sets, posting a team high four aces and making three stops at the net in assisted blocks.
  • Hannah Taylor (Goshen, N.Y.) put up 36 assists for the Mustangs, adding seven digs.
  • Defensive specialist Anna Salamino (Liverpool, N.Y.) led the Morrisville charge with 16 digs in the defensive game, adding three assists across the match.
  • After falling behind 25-17 in the opening set of the match, Morrisville battled back from a 7-2 set two deficit with seven straight points off the service of Huppee and attack at the net by Florio to get back in the contest and take their first lead of the second set.
  • The back and forth battle remained within signal digits of one another before Salamino had a four-point service streak with the use of Gates at the center net, giving Morrisville a 17-12 advantage.
  • After Hartwick pulled the set to a one-point margin, Gates threw down the set point off the set from Taylor.
  • Similar to the second set, Morrisville and Hartwick went back and forth in the third playing to within single points of one another until late in the set.
  • Hartwick tied the contest at 23 all before Huppee fired the ball down at the net to break the tie and followed with an ace, forcing a fourth set for the match.
  • Midway through the fourth set, Morrisville trailed 20-13 before finding rhythm for seven of the next eight points to cut the deficit to one, 21-20.
  • Hartwick extended the lead to two, but back-to-back kills by Florio knotted the set at 22 and played back and forth until a service error by Hartwick gave Morrisville the one-point lead.
  • A competitive volley found the ball being set for Gates, who sent one down the sideline for the point and match win for the Mustangs.
