WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Penn State-Harrisburg took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, recording three hits in the opening frame, and later extending their lead to 5-0 in the second inning.
  • The Lions scored two additional runs in the top of the third, stretching the lead to seven runs.
  • Kellina Murphy (Yonkers, NY) got the bats swinging for the Mustangs in the bottom of the third, leading off the inning with a single to left center. Mackenzie Braun (Toms River, NJ) singled with a bunt at the next at bat, putting Murphy in scoring position at third. Kennedy followed with a bunt single of her own, loading the bases with zero outs on the scoreboard. But Morrisville was unable to convert hits to runs, and left three on base to end the inning.
  • After some defensive substitutions to start the inning, Morrisville was able to hold Penn State-Harrisburg to just one run on two hits in the fourth.
  • The Mustangs tallied four runs on four hits in the fourth, ignited by double from Makayla Lawrence (Webster, NY) to start the inning. Maddy Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY) ripped a single to right center, scoring Lawrence. Caitlin McCutchan (Clayton, DE) continued the offensive momentum with a double of her own, pushing Clark over to third. A wild pitch from Lion's pitcher, Sierra Dixon allowed all runners to advance, scoring Clark.
  • Two batters later, Braun's RBI single to right field drove in two runs for Morrisville, cutting the visitor's lead in half before ending the inning.
  • Both teams remained scoreless over the next two innings, with Penn State-Harrisburg holding an 8-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
  • Kennedy led off the inning with her second hit of the day with a double to left center. Maria Santilli (Bristol, CT) followed with a single of her own to put runners on first and second. Hannah Godfrey (Southgate, MI) pulled through with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Kennedy. But the Mustangs fell short of the come-from-behind victory, ending the game with a line out dropping the first game of the doubleheader.
  • Murphy suffered the loss for Morrisville, facing 21 batters in three innings pitched.
  • In game two of the afternoon, Morrisville posted six total hits, including three hits on three at-bats from Kennedy. But the hosts were unable to drive in any runs, eventually falling to the Lions 10-0 in 5 innings.
