MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The visiting Utica College Pioneers earned the doubleheader sweep over SUNY Morrisville on Thursday afternoon, collecting a 9-0 win in game one, followed by a 5-1 victory in game two.
Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ontario) led the Mustangs with two hits and one RBI on the day.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Utica College got off to a quick start in their season opener, scoring three runs on three hits in the first, and picking up another run in the top of the second.
- Toni Baker (Pittsgrove, NJ) and Caitlin McCutchan (Clayton, DE) earned back-to-back walks in the bottom of the second, but the Mustangs we're unable to capitalize leaving two on base to end the inning.
- The Pioneers picked up three more runs on three hits in the third. Morrisville responded with a hit of their own; Kennedy singled with a bunt down the first baseline, advancing Jessica Burlew (Hopatcong, NJ) to second, but the hosts came up short again leaving two on base.
- The visitors scored two additional unanswered runs to earn the 9-0 victory. Jordyn Conte earned her first win of the season for the Pioneers, while Kennedy took the loss for Morrisville, striking out two in 3.0 innings pitched.
- Utica picked up right where they left off, scoring their first run in the top of the first. Morrisville responded with a run of their own in the first; Burlew got things started by earning the walk, and later advancing to third on the ensuing play. Kennedy picked up her second hit of the day, scoring Burlew. Baker kept the offensive momentum going with a single of her own to right center field, putting Kennedy in scoring position on third. Things were cut short as Makayla Lawrence (Webster, NY) was struck out swinging, leaving one on base.
- Neither team earned a hit or a run over the next two innings, but the Pioneers ended the scoring drought, picking up another run in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Lawrence hit a rocket to left field, earning the double. But the Mustangs weren't able to take advantage of the heavy bat, leaving Lawrence on third base to close out the inning.
- Utica picked up two more[SEE1] runs in the fifth thanks to a two-run home run from Kaitlyn Paul. Later in the sixth, the Pioneers scored one more run to extend their lead to four before the game was called due to a lack of sunlight.
- McCutchan suffered the loss for the Mustangs, striking out one and facing all 28 batters in 5.2 innings pitched.
WHAT'S NEXT
Morrisville softball hits the road for the first time this weekend, as Penn College hosts the Mustangs in their first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest. Games are slated to start at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
