Morrisville drops two in NEAC season opener at Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, P.A. – The SUNY Morrisville Mustangs dropped two North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) games to host, Penn College on Saturday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Mustangs recorded six hits on the day, including a double and a triple from freshmen Jessica Burlew and Toni Baker, respectively.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
 
  • After a slow start in game one, the Mustangs came out swinging, recording their first hit of the day in the second; Makayla Lawrence (Webster, NY) singled to center field, allowing Toni Baker (Pittsgrove, NJ) to advance to third in scoring position. But the visitors came up just short, leaving runners on second and third to end the inning.
  • Morrisville got on the scoreboard first, adding two more hits to the stat sheet in the third. Caitlin McCutchan (Clayton, DE) started off the inning with a walk, and later advanced to second on a ground out from Chyne Kennedy (Southold, Ontario).
  • Jessica Burlew (Hopatcong, NJ) stepped up to the plate with a double to left field, putting McCutchan in scoring position at third. The Mustangs first run came on a passed ball, allowing McCutchan to find her way to home plate.
  • With one out remaining, Toni Baker ripped a shot out to right field, scoring Burlew and recording her first triple of the season.
  • Lawrence had a chance to add to the lead with Baker eagerly waiting on third, but popped up to second base to end the inning, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead over Penn College.
  • The Wildcats would score a run in both the third and fourth innings to tie the game going into the top of the fifth. After two quick outs the start the inning, Kellina Murphy (Yonkers, NY) singled to center field, but Morrisville was unable to keep up the offensive momentum, leaving Murphy on base to end the inning tied at 2-2.
  • Penn College came out with a vengeance, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to record their second victory of the season.
  • The Mustangs saw hits from six players in game two, including Kennedy, Burlew, Murphy, Baker, Lawrence and Dawn Serzanin (New Woodstock, NY).
  • McCutchan suffered the loss for Morrisville, pitching 4.1 innings and facing 19 batters.
 
 
WHAT'S NEXT
 
The Mustangs are scheduled to hit the road again, taking on Penn State-Berks in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm, with game two following at 3:00pm.
