WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • For a second straight season SUNY Morrisville football stunned visiting The College at Brockport, pulling off the upset Empire 8 victory on Senior Day on Drake Field, behind a stellar defensive outing.
  • Brockport entered the contest averaging over 300 yards per game but was stopped short of what they expected for the afternoon as the Mustangs limited the Golden Eagles to a total 186 yards offense, including a mere 38 from leading running back Jala Coad, who leads the league with more than 100 yards rushing per contest.
  • Morrisville outgained the visitors by a slight margin in total offense with 211-yards on the day as the contest proved to be a midfield battle.
  • A majority of the offensive gain for the Mustangs came in the running game as they collected 142-yards to Brockport's 46, a team high 54 coming from sophomore quarterback Steven Frerichs (Wilson, N.Y.).
  • Frerichs, who got the nod for the start under center, also collected 69 yards int eh passing game, completing 3-of-11 attempts for a touchdown score, the game's lone offensive tally.
  • Toure' Hall Jr. (Stratford, Conn.) posted the offensive touchdown for the Mustangs, pulling in the 56-yarder that flew over the head of the secondary, ending the contest with a high 63 yards on two catches.
  • Justin Donnelly (Meridian, N.Y.) added to the running game for the hosts, registering 44 yards on 10 carries, including a 14-yard scramble late in the contest for a Mustang first down.
  • Jack Cheshire went 14-for-28 as the signal caller for the Golden Eagles, collecting 140 yards and throwing an interception on the afternoon.
  • Louis Usera posted a team high six catches for 52 total yards to lead the receiving unit for the visitors.
  • A combined effort of nine tackles from Andrew Covais and Ben Damiani wasn't enough for Brockport, as the Mustangs capitalized off it's defensive game.
  • Ernesto Mitchell (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) recorded a Mustang high 11 stops, three solo, while teammate Joe Miller-LaBar (Groton, N.Y.) added another eight.
  • Miller-LaBar posted 2.5 tackles for a loss of seven yards, including a sack that dropped Cheshire for a loss of five in the fourth quarter.
  • Senior Nash Nelson (Bemus Point, N.Y.) contributed to the defensive effort as he picked off Cheshire to register 19 returned yards.
  • With both teams failing to find the end zone in the opening quarter of action, it was the hosts that put numbers on the board first, with Frerichs tossing the long ball to Hall who had his defender beat by two strides, capping off the six play, 67-yard drive with the 56-yard score.
  • After forcing Brockport to a three-and-out on the ensuing drive, the Mustangs offense drove into Brockport territory, but Alaan Montgomery picked off Frerichs and scrambled 79 yards for the defensive score, giving the visitors their only lead of the contest with 22 seconds to go before half.
  • Brockport opened the second half with possession of the ball, but the Mustangs defense came out of the locker room at the break with the momentum.
  • Three plays into the drive attempt Philemon Benjamin (Queens, N.Y.) knocked the ball loose from the grip of Coad and into the arms of defensive back Roland Bevans (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who scooped up the ball and shocked Brockport with a 60-yard scoring scramble to regain the lead for the hosts.
  • Brockport forced the Mustangs to turn the ball over on the following Morrisville possession, but the momentum was short lived as Nelson stepped in front of the receiver to collect the interception and return the ball back to the offense.Nash Nelson
  • Exchanging possessions early on in the fourth, Brockport put together a drive into Mustang territory, but back-to-back stops by Eddon Gordon (Brooklyn. N.Y.) followed by a pass break up by Bevans found the Golden Eagles turning the ball over on downs to the hosts.
  • Brockport forced the Mustangs to punt on the ensuing drive and attempted one final attempt to collect a score, but the defensive unit held the Golden Eagles to a mere 11 yards on the drive and returned the ball to the offensive unit that finished in victory formation.
  • The loss ends a three-game win streak for the Golden Eagles, while Morrisville picks up their first league victory.
