Morrisville football opens E8 play with loss to #19 Cortland

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville football team opened Empire 8 play Saturday afternoon on Drake Field in Morrisville, falling by a final 58-7 to number 19 ranked Cortland.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville football opened league action Saturday afternoon against nationally ranked #19 SUNY Cortland, falling to 1-4 to date on the season.
  • Cortland opened the contest fast and furious, accumulating 518 total yards offense, while limiting the Mustangs to just 83 on the day.
  • Morrisville's defensive unit, led by Joe Miller-LaBar (Groton, N.Y.) held Cortland to a score and field goal in the opening quarter of action, before a series of strikes led to five straight scores across the second quarter and into the third for a commanding visitor lead.
  • Morrisville's lone score came in the fourth quarter as Jerome Davis (Syracuse, N.Y.) recovered a Red Dragon fumble and returned the ball 80 yards for the defensive touchdown score.
  • The Mustangs were able to gain 56 yards rushing on the day, 23 from quarterback Steven Frerichs (Wilson, N.Y.) in the fourth quarter of action. Frerichs also went 2-for-3 for 11 yards passing, replacing Alek Britten (Schenectady, N.Y.) who was 2-for-10 for a total 16 yards.
  • Miller-LaBar posted 11 stops on the day in the efforts for the defensive unit that was on the field for over 40 minutes, also registering a pass breakup.
  • Philemon Benjamin (Queens, N.Y.) added a seven-tackle effort, along with one for a loss of three yards, while Will Brown (Amherst, N.Y.) added a single game high six.
  • The Mustangs collected donations for the local community food pantry throughout the week in collaboration with the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. After today's collection at the gate, a total of 350 pounds of food was collected to benefit the community.
