WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville dropped an Empire 8 heartbreaker Saturday afternoon as visiting St. John Fisher collected the league win, 28-23.
  • Morrisville outgained the Cardinal offense 434 to 247 total yards offense on the day, including a 281-116 dominating effort in the run game, but two turnovers proved costly for the Mustangs as St. John Fisher posted the victory.
  • Freshman Alex McBurnie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) powered the Mustangs forward in the running game, carrying the ball a total 30 times for 191 net yards.
  • Steven Frerichs (Wilson, N.Y.) added 39 in 14 attempts for two touchdown scores, while going 3-for-3 under center for 34 yards passing yards.
  • Freshman Alek Britton (Schenectady, N.Y.), who also saw time in the shot gun formation for the Mustangs, added 126 yards behind 9-for-17 in completions.
  • Jarrell Chaney (Albany, N.Y.) led the receiving unit with 51 yards on two catches, while Quamel Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) added 35 yards on three receptions and Toure' Hall, Jr. (Stratford, Conn.) another 29 on his four catches.
  • Basil Watson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted a collegiate high 12 stops in the defensive efforts, recording six solo tackles and two for a loss of three yards. One of his stops was a sack for a loss of two yards.
  • St. John Fisher quarterback Joseph Torrillo went 9-for-17 on the day with two passing scores as he collected 147 yards, a total 89 to lead receiver Tysean Sizer who reigned in three.
  • Dahmir Pross posted a net total 79 yards on the ground for the Cardinals in his 20 carries, adding a touchdown to his totals on the day.
  • Joe Miscia led all defensive players with 19 total tackles, 10 solo stops, while teammate Anthony Manna collected 12 on the day.
  • St. John Fisher was first to strike, as Torrillo connected with O'Dea at the 10:45 mark of the opening quarter on the seven-yard strike. Fisher gained possession on the Mustangs 31-yard line after a botched fourth down play that turned over the ball on downs.
  • Morrisville was able to pull even in the second, as Frerichs followed the line up center and pushed forward for the one-yard rushing score.
  • The Mustangs added to their totals nearly five minutes later as Justin Donnelly (Meridian, N.Y.) ran around the right to cap off the 64-yard, eight play drive for a 14-7 Morrisville lead.
  • After a Pross eight-yard rushing score to even it at 14, Morrisville's Owen Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.) nailed the 23-yard field goal to send the game into the half with a 17-14 host lead.
  • In the third, Fisher took a 21-17 edge on a four-yard pass from Torrillo to Johnathan Letta, but it was the defense on the ensuing play that made it a 11-point lead for the visitors.
  • Justin Rodriguez stepped in front of Britten's pass intended for Hall and scrambled 35 yards into the end zone for the defensive score.
  • Morrisville was able to get one back late in the quarter as Frerichs capped off the 66-yard drive for the Mustangs with his second one-yard rushing score, cutting the lead to 28-23.
  • Late in the fourth, Morrisville drove deep into St. John Fisher territory, but the fourth down attempt fell inches short and turned the ball over to the visitors on downs.
