SUNY Morrisvillle Athletics discontinues men's golf sponsorship

Men's Golf
MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – SUNY Morrisville Athletics announced Friday that it has eliminated the sponsorship of men's golf, effective immediately.

"Following a thorough cost analysis In an effort to achieve financial stability within the athletics department, SUNY Morrisville has reached the difficult decision to discontinue our men's golf program," said Interim Athletic Director Todd Kleinhans. "We greatly appreciate the hard work that our golf student-athletes and staff have put into building the program since it was added a few years ago."

"Although this is a very difficult decision, our review found that the discontinuation of men's golf would have the least impact on our student-athletes and coaching staff," said Interim Vice President for Student Affairs, Mary Bonderoff. "We will continue to do our best to support our student-athletes and coaches during these challenging times."

During the 2019-20 season, the men's golf roster consisted of six student-athletes, of which five also are currently members of an additional athletics team at Morrisville. The current head coach of the men's golf team also currently serves as the head coach of an additional team within the department and will remain on staff.

"The college remains committed to providing a meaningful experience for our student-athletes," Kleinhans said. "We hope that this decision positions us to move forward in a way that will allow the financial support our remaining 16 varsity teams need to continue the success they have seen in recent years."

Morrisville added men's golf to its intercollegiate offerings in the fall of 2013 and over the course of the past seven seasons competed within the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), where the team recorded a program-best third-place finish at the conference championships in 2016.

SUNY Morrisville's curricula are enriched with applied learning and pave the way for opportunity at both the Morrisville and Norwich campuses. An action-oriented, interactive learning lab, the college is a national leader in technology and has been lauded for its exemplary, innovative and effective community service programs.

The college was ranked among the Best Regional Colleges in the North by U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges 2021 issue and was among the top 10 performers for social mobility, and was also recognized in the Top Public Schools, Regional Colleges North in the 2021 Best Colleges rankings.
