All-around team contribution leads to win over Wells

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team made it four straight wins Wednesday night as the Mustangs all-around team effort contributed to a 90-67 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) win over visiting Wells College on their home court in Morrisville.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Morrisville 90, Wells 67 (halftime: Morrisville 51-33)
  • Location: STUAC Gymnasium, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 7-6, 4-0 NEAC; Wells 2-10, 1-3 NEAC
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Six total Mustangs notched double-figures Wednesday night as the all-around team effort led to a 90-67 defeat of Wells College for a fourth straight NEAC win.
  • Kevin Dennis (Bronx, N.Y.) led all scorers with his 22-point, 21 rebound double-double, adding two assists, two blocked shots and a steal to his tallies.
  • Ishmael Chisholm (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added 11 points, while assisting five, while fellow guard Jon Brennan (Irvington, N.Y.) had a near double-double with his 10-point outing, dishing out a game high nine assists.
  • Derek Beames (Otego, N.Y.) also collected 10 points, snagging eight rebounds and blocking three, while fellow big man Jaylin Montalvo (Hempstead, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points.
  • Tyrin Miller (White Plains, N.Y.) rounded out the Mustang leaderboard with 10 points.
  • Morrisville came out of the gates in the opening half with hot hands, shooting a season best 71.43% from the floor, including an 8-for-12 performance from behind the arc.
  • Wells was able to keep play in the opening half within striking distance, but a 9-0 Mustang spurt opened the hosts lead to 13, leading to a 51-34 advantage at the halftime break.
  • The Express was able to pull within 14 early on in the second, but again the Mustangs proved too much offensively as they hit the paint behind the power of their senior forward, putting together an 11-0 run that included eight alone from Dennis.
  • A jumper by Jalen Tribble broke up the Mustangs run, and gave the visitors momentum, cutting the lead to 14, but once again Morrisville limited Wells offensively while running wild on their own end of the court.
  • Hunter Kowaleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.) sealed the win for the hosts with his three-ball from the top of the key with 1:35 to go for a 24-point lead, an advantage that was too much for the Express to overcome given limited time.
  • Morrisville finished shooting 59.3% from the floor across both periods of play, including 48.1% from long range.
  • They dominated play in the paint, outgaining Wells 48-28 on the glass, while netting 36 in play inside.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville will return to the court on Saturday, traveling to cross town rival SUNY Polytechnic for a 1 p.m. NEAC tip.
