Mustangs Go Toe-to-toe with Mules, pull out 3-2 win in Match 1

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Despite taking a decisive 25-13 win in the first set, Morrisville battled back and forth with the Mules from Muhlenberg College to grind out a 3-2 win in the Mustangs' first match of two at the Vassar Tournament.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Siobhan Moore (Leyden, Mass.) helped the Mustangs jump out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set, serving up three aces in a row.
  • Morrisville continued to put distance between themselves and the Mules in the first set, picking up five straight points behind a strong service performance from Anna Salamino (Liverpool, N.Y.) to give the Mustangs an early 12-6 advantage.
  • The Mustangs would ultimately take the first set 25-13, but the Mules fought back in the second set 25-22 to knot the match up at two sets all.
  • From there, the match would turn into a back and forth battle as each team traded blows, pushing the match to a fifth and decisive set.
  • Muhlenberg took an early 4-1 lead in the fifth set, but it was the Mustangs who would be the first to 8 points behind another strong serve from Salamino.
  • After the side switch, the Mules were able to get the score to 8-8, but the presence at the net for the Mustangs, forced Muhlenberg into three straight attack errors to bring the score to 12-8 in favor of Morrisville.  From there the Mustangs would not look back, closing out the set 15-9 to take the 3-2 match win.
  • Megyan Merrill (Millport, N.Y.) led the Mustangs offensively posting 27 kills, followed by Amelia Baratier (Liverpool, N.Y.) with 19.
  • Defensively, Morrisville was strong at the net with six Mustangs combining for 14 total blocks.  Sam Wolf (Liverpool, N.Y.) anchored the back line, picking up 43 digs.  Baratier followed with 29 while Merrill added 25.
