Mustangs Trade Blows with Brewers but Fall Short in Five Set Affair

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Morrisville Women's Volleyball traded blows with Vassar College in the final match of the Brewers' tri-match, but it would be the hosts who would walk away victorious defeating the Mustangs in 5 sets.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score:  Vassar 3, Morrisville 2
  • Location: Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
  • Records:  Morrisville 4-2, Vassar 3-3

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Similar to the first match of the day for the Mustangs, Morrisville came out with the first set victory.  Unfortunately for the visiting squad, the host Brewers rallied back to take the second and third sets.
  • Morrisville would not go down without a fight.  The Mustangs who are no strangers to five set affairs so far this season pushed back to take the fourth set 26-24.
  • The final set was a back and forth battle in and of itself as neither team built more than a two point lead.  Ultimately it was the Vassar tandem of Madison Wilson and Sara Ehnstrom that put Morrisville away to collect the final two point of the set to take the 3-2 match win.
  • Megyan Merrill (Millport, N.Y.) paced the offensive attack for the Mustangs with 23 kills, Amelia Baratier (Liverpool, N.Y.) added 15, and freshman Brianna Gates (Eagle, Colo.) doubled her career high with 12 kills in the match.
  • Siobhan Moore (Leyden, Mass.) orchestrated the offense, collecting 45 assists.
  • Defensively, five Mustangs recorded double digit kills, led by Sam Wolf (Liverpool, N.Y.) with 35.  Baratier added 17 digs, while Moore collected 13 and Anna Salamino (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Merrill picked up 12 and 11 digs respectively.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • Morrisville will hit the road again next weekend, traveling to Western Connecticut State for a two-day tournament.  The Mustangs will open with the host team at 7 PM on Friday evening.  Saturday's action will include a rematch against Vassar at noon followed by Wesleyan at 2 PM.
