Florio’s 14 Kills Lift Mustangs over Colonials in Five Sets

DANBURY, Conn. – The Mustangs picked up a key non-conference victory on Friday night, defeating Western Connecticut State on the road in another thrilling five set affair.

  • Final Score:  Morrisville 3, Western Connecticut St. 2

  • Records:  Morrisville 5-2, Western Connecticut St. 5-2
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The Mustangs came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, picking up 13 kills in a 25-17 first set win.
  • Morrisville was able to match their first set performance with another 13 kills in the second set, but the Colonials kept it close picking up extra points on aces.  However, Morrisville was able to hang on for a 26-24 win to go up two sets to none.
  • The tides turned in the third and fourth sets with Western Connecticut State turning it up offensively, putting away 25 kills to just 16 from the Mustangs over the two sets.  The Colonials squeaked by the Mustangs in the third set 25-23 and then delivered a 25-16 win in the fourth to force a fifth set.
  • The Mustangs regained control in the fifth set behind a strong net presence which forced the Colonials into four attack errors including a momentum shifting block assist from Brianna Gates (Eagle, Colo.) and Kirsten Florio (Wellsboro, Pa.) to give Morrisville a 12-11 advantage in the final set.
  • Morrisville traded points with the host squad at the tail end of the final set, but the Mustangs capitalized on a Colonials' service error which evened the set score at 14 all.
  • Amelia Baratier (Liverpool, N.Y.) proceeded to put away back to back kills to seal the 16-14 victory to take the match 3-2.
  • Florio led the way offensively with 14 kills while only committing four attack errors over the five sets.  Megyan Merrill (Millport, N.Y.) added 12 kills, while Baratier picked up 10 kills.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • Morrisville will get right back to work tomorrow with a rematch against Vassar at noon followed by Wesleyan at 2 PM.
