Mustangs beat undefeated Delhi in double overtime thriller

DELHI, NY – The Morrisville State women's soccer team played their first overtime match of the season on Wednesday night, defeating SUNY Delhi 3-2 in a stunning double overtime victory. The Mustangs netted the game winning goal with less than three minutes left in the second overtime period, handing the Broncos their first loss of the season.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The Broncos struck first, netting their first score just over a minute into the contest. Micayla Slattery posted the goal for Delhi, marking the only score of the half for either team.
  • Delhi doubled their lead early in the second half when Alexa DuBois netted her seventh goal of the season in the 51' of action. Morrisville cut the lead in the 62' of play when Shay Franklin (North Norwich, NY) capitalized off a cross from freshman defender, Tiffany Dicenzo (Rochester, NY).
  • The match took a wild turn with just over a minute of play remaining in regulation when a scuffle broke out between both teams. That led to a shift in momentum for Morrisville State, as the visitors found the back of the net with just 37 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Freshman defender, Ashley Tette (Rochester, NY) netted her first collegiate goal to tie the game at 2-2. Marking her first of the season, Angelina Rinaldi (Huntington Station, NY) was credited with the assist.
  • Hailey Moriarty (Nunda, NY) was the hero of the day, following in Tette's footsteps and recording her first collegiate goal. The freshman forward broke through on a breakaway to net the game winner with 2:13 left to play in the second overtime period.
  • Over the course of both overtime periods, Morrisville State managed to post twelve shots to the Bronco's zero. With the boost in offense in the extra time, the Mustangs held a 26-22 advantage in shots, while SUNY Delhi held the advantage in corner kicks, 12-8.
  • Freshman goalkeeper, Meaghan Miller (West Irondequoit, NY) saw all 108' of action in goal for the Mustangs, allowing two goals on ten shots on goal, and tailing eight saves in the win.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
Women's soccer returns to Drake Field this coming Saturday when they play host to SUNY Cobleskill in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play. Action is slated to start at 3:00pm.
