Bochert tips home overtime winner as Morrisville men top Potsdam 3-2

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Host Morrisville men's ice hockey continues to stun the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), netting a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against visiting SUNY Potsdam Friday night in Morrisville to improve to 5-2 overall in league action.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Morrisville 3, Potsdam 2 OT (by period: Morrisville 1-0-1-1, Potsdam 0-2-0-0)
  • Location: Morrisville IcePlex, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 6-4, 5-2 SUNYAC; Potsdam 1-9-1, 1-6-1 SUNYAC
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Potsdam scored two unanswered tallies in the second to claim a 2-1 advantage after two periods, before a tally midway through the third forced an overtime period, where the Mustangs tipped home the thrilling score to capture a fifth league win of the season.
  • Morrisville's Jestin Somero (New Ipswich, N.H.) was the first to put home a tally Friday night, breaking the scoreless battle at the 16:14 mark of the opening period on the power play dish from Nick DeVito (Averill Park, N.Y.) and James Boisvert (Mansfield, Texas).
  • Potsdam rallied for two unanswered scores in the second, carrying a 2-1 lead into the final period, but an equalizer midway through from Eric Melso (Philadelphia, Pa.) on the wrap around tied the game at two and forced an extra period.
  • Somero was credited with the assist on Melso's tally.
  • Potsdam, who had a persistent offensive attack on the Mustangs goal, failed to get past Morrisville netminder Jared Young (Pueblo West, Colo.) who turned away nine in the third, and played a big part in forcing the extra frame with a doorstop save down the stretch.
  • Both teams battled back and forth in the opening minutes of the overtime period, but it was a Potsdam cross-checking penalty at 2:08 that proved to be a critical mistake by the Bears, as Morrisville would have the extra man advantage for a majority of the remainder of overtime.
  • Michael Paglucca turned away two of the Mustangs attempts, but it was a shot sent from the blue line by defender R. Austin Johnson (Pawling, N.Y.) that landed on the crease in front of Paglucca's pads and was tapped home by senior forward Ryan Bochert (Denver, Colo.) for the win.
  • Paglucca finished with 22 total saves in the efforts for the Bears, recording the loss in net.
  • Young backstopped the Mustangs to a 6-4 overall record, 5-2 SUNYAC slate with his 45 save performance that included 21 stops in the second period alone.
