Mustangs unable to overcome slow start, fall on the road at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team got off to a slow start Wednesday evening, as host Utica College earned an 89-75 cross town win on the Pioneers home court in Utica.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville men's basketball dropped to 2-4 overall Wednesday evening as they fell 89-75 in a cross-town affair with non-league opponent Utica College.
  • Four posted double figures for the Mustangs, including senior Tyrin Miller (White Plains, N.Y.) who led the Mustangs with 20 behind his 4-of-5 shooting from long range.
  • Justin Mitchell (Newburgh, N.Y.) added 19, while collecting five rebounds, three on the offensive glass.
  • Kevin Dennis (Bronx, N.Y.) and Jaylin Montalvo (Hempstead, N.Y.) added 14 and 13 points, respectively, as the Mustangs tallied 38 total in the inside game.
  • Dennis led Morrisville with six boards, despite being outgained by the Pioneers 32-23, and added a team best four assists.
  • Utica opened with a 16-0 run in the opening five minutes of the contest and raced out to a 53-32 lead at the break.
  • In the second, Morrisville was able to cut the deficit to 11, but a 6-0 spurt that included a fast break slam by the Pioneers regained the significant lead and kept the hosts on track for the non-league win.
  • Five total Utica players registered double figures, led by Thomas Morreale who hit 7-of-9 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from downtown for 18 points.
  • Utica shot 55.4% from the floor on the night, including 50% from beyond the three-point arc.
  • Morrisville shot 56.25% from the floor in the second half, outgaining the Pioneers 43-36 in points, but the deficit was too much as the hosts claimed the win.

  • Morrisville will return to the court on Saturday, December 7th, hosting Lancaster Bible College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on the Mustangs home court.
