THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Morrisville 49, St. John Fisher 13 (halftime: Morrisville 42-6)
  • Location: Drake Field, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 5-4, 3-2 Empire 8; St. John Fisher 13, 1-4 Empire 8

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Despite frigid temperatures Saturday afternoon, host SUNY Morrisville football kept the action hot on the field as they collected their third straight win in Empire 8 action, downing the visiting St. John Fisher Cardinals by a 49-13 final score on Drake Field in Morrisville.
  • With the victory, the Mustangs move into third place overall in league standings, one game behind Cortland who sits in second after pulling off a tightly matched contest against Hartwick earlier today.
  • Fisher had no response as Morrisville hit the visitors with a double whammy, running wild offensively for a total 498 yards offense; while the defense limited the normally high powered passing offense to just 266 collective yards on the day, while registering a single game record five interceptions.
  • The Mustangs, who put up big numbers offensively with the running game, pushed forward for a total 275 on the afternoon behind the power of senior running back Kinsey Williams (Rome, N.Y.). Williams, who registered a career high 174 net yards rushing, scored three times, adding another 41 yards to his offensive totals in the receiving game. He recorded 157 yards and three scores by the half.
  • Sterling Fitz-Henley (Brentwood, N.Y.) added another 89 net yards to the running game, with a long scramble of 37.
  • Junior quarterback Bill Flatow (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) threw for 223 yards and two scores completing 16-of-27 passes, tying the single season record for passing touchdowns with a total 23 on the year.
  • Toure' Hall Jr. (Stratford, Conn.) led the receiving unit with 71 yards and a score on three catches, while fellow wide out Jermaine Cooper (New York, N.Y.) added another 69 yards on five receptions.
  • Kyle Tuohy (Amaranth, Ont.) collected 36 yards on two receptions, adding a score to the offensive blitz for the Mustangs.
  • Defensively, Morrisville limited the visitors to just 129 yards passing, as Cardinals quarterback Hunter Walsh struggled in the throwing game, completing just 8-of-21 passes for 129 yards and two scores. Walsh was picked off a total five times throughout the contest, four that came in the first half.
  • Dahmir Pross powered forward for a majority of the Cardinals offense, rushing for a total 117 yards on 26 attempts.
  • Pat Galer led the receiving unit for St. John Fisher with a total 39 yards on three receptions, catching one of two touchdown scores for the visitors.
  • A trio of Cardinals out forth a double digit defensive effort with a combined 33 tackles, as Jason Rodriguez made 12 stops to go along with 11 for Cameron Bellino and 10 for Justin Wheeler. Wheeler also registered the lone sack of the contest, dropping Flatow for a six-yard loss.
  • Morrisville linebacker Ernesto Mitchell (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) was a force for the host defensive unit, collecting a team high 13 stops, while recording one of five interceptions on the afternoon.
  • Philemon Benjamin (Queens, N.Y.) added nine tackles, four solo, while Jermaine Rankine (Newburgh, N.Y.) collected a total eight on the day, including 1.5 for a loss of four yards.
  • The secondary proved difficult for Walsh to get past, as he was picked off four times by the Mustangs safety unit. Deondrade Wells (Goshen, N.Y.) collected two for a total 32-yards returned, while Johnny Vigliotti (Syracuse, N.Y.) prevented a Cardinal score with his pick in the end zone.
  • Justin Donnelly (Meridian, N.Y.) recorded his first interception of his collegiate career, returning the ball 60-yards for the defensive score.
  • Morrisville came out of the gates with a solid game plan, and on their first drive, put numbers on the board. Facing a fourth down and five situation, Flatow had time in the pocket and found Tuohy on the right who had a step on his defender for the 18-yard scoring completion to complete the 69 yard drive while eating up over six minutes of time on the clock.
  • Morrisville's defensive unit set the tone early, limiting the visitors to just six yards on their ensuing possession to force the punt, and within minutes extended the lead to 14-0 with the quickness of Williams who scrambled for a total 50 yards on six plays, and adding another 27 after a pass completion from Flatow. Williams capped off the 77-yard drive with his six-yard point up the center for his first score of the day.
  • The Mustangs defensive unit again snipped the Cardinals wings on the following possession, as Donnelly picked off Walsh for his 60-yard touchdown return, making it a 21-0 host lead with 1:46 to go in the quarter.
  • Fisher was able to get one back on their first play of the second quarter, as Walsh snuck one to Johnathan Letta for the 21-yard scoring pass play, but within minutes the Mustangs regained their three possession lead as Kinsey collected his second touchdown run of the day, getting the block around the right for the diving score over the pylon.
  • The ball quickly returned to the hands of the Mustangs offensive unit as a tip from the Morrisville defensive line fell into the hands of Mitchell on Fisher's own 24-yard line, leading to a 27-yard scoring scramble by Kinsey with a huge block on the left.
  • After starting a drive at midfield, Fisher was able to move the ball forward into Morrisville territory on a six-yard run, but on the following play, history repeated itself as Walsh threw his third interception, this time to a waiting Wells who collected the underthrown pass before returning the ball 32 yards to the visitors 33-yard line.
  • Wells' interception set up a 33-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a one-yard pound up center by Mike Cirasuolo (Marcy, N.Y.) for the commanding 42-6 Mustang lead.
  • Fisher made a final attempt to head into the locker room by cutting into the Mustang lead, but again the Mustang secondary caged the Cardinals as Wells collected his second pick, sending the game into the locker room with a 42-6 Morrisville advantage at the break.
  • St. John Fisher was able to find some offensive rhythm to start the third, but the 19-yard pass attempt by Walsh again landed in the arms of a Morrisville defender. Vigliotti dove in front of his coverage and came down with the fifth interception for the Mustangs in the end zone, forcing the Cardinal turnover.
  • Walsh moved the visitors forward on the ensuing possession and hit Pat Galer in the left corner for the five-yard scoring pass play to make it a 42-13 ball game, but much like the rest of the contest, Morrisville had an answer on their following possession.
  • The Cardinals went high in an attempt to tackle Kinsey who escaped for a 16 yard gain, before Flatow connected with Cooper along the near sideline, moving the ball forward 28-yards to the Mustangs 39.
  • With protection from the line, Flatow had time in the pocket and hit Hall on the out route, who turned on the jets along the far sideline for the 61-yard scoring pass, and 49-13 host lead.
  • Desmond Akpanoko (Roosevelt, N.Y.) went 7-for-7 in PAT's for the Mustangs, while adding a total 416 yards on eight kick-offs, a 52.0 yard average.
  • Hunter Regels (Gansevoort, N.Y.) punted two away for Morrisville, collecting a long 42-yards into the wind while averaging 33.0 yards per kick.
  • Reserves saw time for the Mustangs in the fourth quarter, and kept the visitors off the board as the hosts collected the big conference win.
  • Morrisville, who topped the Cardinals 35-7 a year ago, collect their second straight win over Fisher to lead the series 3-2.

WHAT'S NEXT:
  • Morrisville will host SUNY Brockport in the regular season finale next Saturday on Drake Field. Kick-off is scheduled for noon.
