Late 3rd Period Push Not Enough, Mustangs fall 3-1 to Bears

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – SUNY Potsdam scored in each period, downing the Mustangs 3-1 in Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) action on Friday evening.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The Bears and the Mustangs each had chances throughout the first period, putting seven and five shots on goal respectively.
  • Morrisville was able to draw a hooking penalty at 8:21 elapsed in the first, but SUNY Potsdam was able to kill off the penalty.
  • Nine minutes later, the Bears received their first power play opportunity of the evening and were able to capitalize, taking a 1-0 lead at 18:21.
  • Down 1-0, Morrisville killed off an early penalty, and went right to work on the offensive end as they tried to take advantage of a Bears roughing penalty. 
  • However, the Mustangs were only able to get one shot on goal as SUNY Potsdam once again ran their penalty kill to perfection.
  • The Bears took a 2-0 advantage at the 16:19 mark in the second.
  • SUNY Potsdam appeared to put the Mustangs away with their third goal of the game at the 6:28 mark in the third period. 
  • Morrisville responded to the 3-0 deficit, going to work on the power play three minutes later. 
  • Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, B.C.) typically the Mustangs assist machine, was able to find the back of the net for her first goal of the season to inch Morrisville closer to a comeback.
  • Morrisville would draw two more SUNY Potsdam penalties in the third, the second of which allowed the Mustangs to pull their goal tender in favor of another skater.
  • Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the Bears goalie denied the attempts to secure the 3-1 NEWHL victory for SUNY Potsdam.

  • Morrisville hits the road for another NEWHL contest as they travel north to take on SUNY Canton at 4 PM in Canton, N.Y.
