Morrisville women settle for draw with Canton

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Canton scored the equalizer in the final minute of regulation Saturday afternoon to force an overtime period, but host Morrisville women's hockey had to settle for a two goal draw as they were unable to collect in the extra time.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Morrisville 2, Canton 2 (by period: Morrisville 1-1-0, Canton 0-1-1)
  • Location: Morrisville IcePlex, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 0-1-1, 0-1-1 NEWHL; Canton 0-1-1, 0-1-1 NEWHL

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Canton scored the equalizing tally at the 19:03 mark of the third period to force an extra period, and the hosts had to settle for a two goal draw as Morrisville was unable to capitalize on the extra time in the Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) battle.
  • The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead at 14:44 in the first as freshman Rhys Brown (Kemptville, Ont.) collected her first collegiate score off the dish from Sierra Voeller (Penticton, B.C.).
  • That lead withstood until the 8:35 mark of the second when Breanna Bedborough netted the unassisted tally to even the contest at one.
  • Morrisville regained their lead late in the period, though, as Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ont.) cleaned up the loose puck in the middle of the offensive zone and rifled it past the Roos net minder for the score.
  • Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, N.Y.) and Mackenzie Lombardi (Hamilton, Ont.) collected the assists.
  • That lead would hold until the final minute of regulation when Canton pulled their goalie for an extra skater and capitalized with the evening tally at the 19:03 mark, forcing the overtime period.
  • Canton carried that momentum into the extra time, and forced the Mustangs defense to put up a stand, as freshman tender Sissy Harman (Eden, N.Y.) made five stops to keep the Roos off the board.
  • Harman finished with 17 saves in the tie, including making seven stops in the second period of action.
  • Sirena Alvarez also gets the tie for the Roos, collecting 31 saves, 23 combined in the first two periods of the Saturday afternoon contest.

WHAT'S NEXT:
  • Morrisville State returns to the ice Tuesday, hosting William Smith College in a 7 p.m. non-league battle.
