WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The visiting Herons came out firing on all cylinders on Tuesday evening, picking up two goal within the first two minutes of action.
- The Mustangs regained their footing late in the second period, converting on one of four power play attempts in the contest.
- Mackenzie Lombardi (Hamilton, Ont.) found the back of the net at the 18:56 mark. Alexziz Giannamore (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ont.) picked up the assists.
- The third period proved to be a wild one for both teams starting with William Smith picking up two more tallies at the 3:16 and 4:30 marks.
- However, the Mustangs responded in kind, picking up two of their own.
- Kendra Johnston (St. Albert, Alta.) picked up her first collegiate goal at 5:01 into the period, collecting the rebound from Giannamore's initial shot on goal to bring the Mustangs within two. Giannamore was credited with the assist.
- Morrisville caught William Smith off guard in transition just over a minute later as Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, B.C.) located Kennedy across the ice with a pass as she stepped off the ice for a line change. Kennedy quickly found Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) cutting through the neutral zone. McDonald made a quick move to split the Herons' two defensemen before slipping her shot into the back of the net to bring the mustangs within one.
- From there things calmed down offensively for both teams despite Morrisville pounding the net with shots.
- Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the Herons picked up an insurance goal with just under five minutes left in regulation and were able to hang on for the 5-3 win.
