New Paltz edges Morrisville in fifth for 3-2 match win

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – SUNY New Paltz and visiting Morrisville State went head to head through five sets, but it was the Hawks that were able to pull out the win, edging the Mustangs by two in the fifth for the win Saturday afternoon at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • SUNY New Paltz and Morrisville State battled back and forth through five sets Saturday afternoon, but the Hawks pulled out the victory down the stretch for the 3-2 match win.
  • Morrisville took the first from the Hawks, 25-23, before New Paltz reversed the tables and evened the match at one with a 25-23 set two win.
  • The Hawks took a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 set victory in the third, before Morrisville sent it into the fifth with a 25-18 set four win.
  • In the fifth, New Paltz pulled out the back and forth battle with a 15-13 edge for the match.
  • Senior outside hitter Megyan Merrill (Millport, N.Y.) collected 24 kills in the loss, while three additional teammates posted double-digits in the attack game, including freshman Brianna Gates (Eagle, Colo.) who collected 13.
  • Junior Kirsten Florio (Wellsboro, Pa.) and senior Amelia Baratier (Liverpool, N.Y.) each added 11.
  • Freshman Siobhan Moore (Leyden, Mass.) put up 56 assists in the five set contest, also serving up two aces and collecting nine digs.
  • Senior defensive specialist Sam Wolf (Liverpool, N.Y.) registered 36 digs in the Mustangs efforts, also contributing to the offensive game with two service aces.
  • Baratier added 20 digs to her tallies on the day, along with 13 for Merrill.
  • Both teams played pretty even throughout the contest, but a 10 block effort from New Paltz proved to be the difference between the two in the match.

  • Morrisville hits the court against Plattsburgh at 2 p.m. in the final non-league match of the regular season.
