Morrisville men unable to overcome late W&J rally

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Morrisville men's basketball dropped their first contest of the 2019 season Friday evening, unable to overcome the late second half push by Washington and Jefferson who collected the 63-59 win at the Buffalo State Cole Classic held in Buffalo.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting Morrisville men's basketball overcame a nine-point halftime deficit, but were unable to withstand a late rally by Washington and Jefferson University, as they dropped their first contest of the 2019 season by a 63-59 final score in the opening round of the Buffalo State Cole Classic held in Buffalo Friday.
  • Senior Justin Mitchell (Newburgh, N.Y.) led the Mustang efforts with 20 points, adding four rebounds and two steals to his tallies.
  • Fellow senior Kevin Dennis (Bronx, N.Y.) collected a second straight double-double, adding 13 points and 13 rebounds to the Morrisville tallies, collecting three steals.
  • W&J's Cameron Seeman recorded 17 points to lead the home squad to the championship contest, adding eight boards as they held the slim 37-32 advantage on the glass.
  • Morrisville, who trailed 38-29 at the break, opened the second half with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to two in the first five minutes of the second, battling back and forth for the remainder of the contest.
  • Ishmael Chisholm (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) gave the Mustangs the one-point advantage with 2:05 to go in the second on a fast break layup, but W&J regained the lead a minute later with one of their own, completing the three-point play with the made free throw for the 60-58 advantage.
  • Jon Brennan (Irvington, N.Y.) hit the back end of two free throw attempts to make it a one-point ball game with 26 seconds showing, but three from the charity stripe by W&J secured the win for the home squad.
  • Morrisville forced 20 Washington & Jefferson miscues on the night, collecting 18 points towards their tallies, while registering 38 total in the paint.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
  • Morrisville will play in the consolation final tomorrow, facing the loser of the Buffalo State/Medaille matchup being played later tonight.
