Second half surge sends Morrisville men to season opening win over Brockport

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Host Morrisville men's basketball battled back from an eight point halftime deficit to overpower the visiting Brockport Golden Eagles in the second half, collecting a thrilling 73-70 season opening win on their home court in Morrisville Tuesday night.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Host Morrisville men's basketball outscored the visiting Golden Eagles 42-31 in the second half of action Tuesday evening in Morrisville, overcoming an eight point deficit to top Brockport for a season opening 73-70 win on their home court.
A quad of senior Mustang players collected double digits, including guard Tyrin Miller (White Plains, N.Y.) who led the way with 17 on the night.
Derek Beames (Otego, N.Y.) and Kevin Dennis (Bronx, N.Y.) had big nights for the Mustangs in the post, netting 14 points apiece, with Dennis leading all rebounders with 19. Beames added seven boards, hitting a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Justin Mitchell (Newburgh, N.Y.) collected 13 points in the win, adding seven assists and a steal to his tallies.
Morrisville outgained the Golden Eagles 41-26 on the boards, holding the 4-to-17 advantage on the offensive glass where they added 18 second chance points on the night.
In a game that saw a lead change 14 times, including two in the final two minutes of play, Morrisville gained momentum with 2:44 to go with a wide open three from it's senior guard Miller from the left wing to knot the game at 66, completing an 8-2 Mustang run.
Brockport regained the slight two-point advantage moments later, as Danny Ashley hit the layup to put the visitors back out in front, but another jumper from Miller on the opposite end, again tied the contest for the Mustangs, with 1:29 showing on the clock.
After collecting the rebound off a missed Brockport jumper, Miller connected with Dennis in the Mustangs offensive end of the court for the go ahead bucket in the paint.
Justin Summers was able to get the game back within one for the visitors, hitting the back end of two free throw opportunities, and after one for the Mustangs' Mitchell seconds later was able to keep the advantage in favor of the hosts.
Summers again made it a one-point game with five ticks remaining, but a Brockport foul sent the Mustangs Ishmael Chisholm (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) to the line as the hosts were in the double bonus, where he hit both free throw attempts to seal the victory.

Morrisville will return to the floor this weekend at the Buffalo State tip-off tournament, opening action on Friday against Washington and Jefferson College at 6 p.m. in Buffalo.
