Time to Dance! Mustangs Take 3rd Straight NEAC Crown Defeating Abington 3-0

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Mustangs captured their third straight North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Nittany Lions from Penn State Abington 3-0.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Morrisville 3, Penn State Abington 0
  • Location: Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville (22-7 Overall), Penn State Abington (17-16 Overall)

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Morrisville and Abington went back and forth through the first few points until Siobhan Moore (Leyden, Mass.) served the Mustangs to an 8-2 lead.
  • The Nittany Lions would battle back briefly, but the Mustangs would gradually add to their lead with every held serve, ultimately taking the first set 25-13.
  • The 2019 NEAC Offensive Player of the Year, Megyan Merrill (Millport, N.Y.) asserted her presence early, picking up nine of her match-high 21 kills in the first set.
  • Abington pushed the Mustangs hard in the second set, but once again Morrisville was successful in pushing points during their serve.
  • The Morrisville offense used their depth in the second set, with Brianna Gates (Eagle, Colo.) leading the charge with six kills, while Amelia Baratier (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Merrill each added five a piece en route to a 25-18 second set win.
  • The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead in the third set behind two opening serve aces from Sam Wolf (Liverpool, N.Y.) and another by Moore a few points later to give Morrisville the 9-2 advantage.
  • Moore would help the Mustangs push points later in the set as the Mustangs extended their lead to 23-14.
  • However, the Nittany Lions would not go down without a fight, pushing their own points during their serve runs to bring themselves within five.
  • The push would be short lived as Merrill put the match away with a kill from the Mustangs middle to the back right corner of the Abington line.
  • In addition to Merrill finishing with 21 kills, the senior tacked on seven digs.
  • Gates and Kirsten Florio (Wellsboro, Pa.) would also finish the match with double figures in kills, finishing with 12 and 10 respectively.
  • Moore was one assist shy of 50 for the match while also contributing three aces and two momentum changing block assists.
  • Defensively, Wolf picked up 15 digs, several of which helped keep rallies alive for the Mustangs.  For her efforts, Wolf was also named the 2019 NEAC Tournament Most Valuable Player as the senior libero finished with 32 digs, six aces, and seven assists.
  • The Mustangs' victory gives the squad an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
