Late goal lifts Utica College over Mustangs

UTICA, N.Y. – A late Pioneer goal with less than 14' to go in regulation gave host Utica College, a one-goal lead and the eventual win against visiting Morrisville State men's soccer on Tuesday evening. With the loss, the Mustangs fall to 6-6-1 on the season, while the Pioneers improve their overall record to 5-9-1.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Mustangs took the early 1-0 lead when freshman midfielder, Salu Zakari (Bronx, NY) notched his first goal of the season at the 16:13 mark. The assist was credited to freshman defender, William Lynch (Island Trees, NY).
  • Utica evened the score just 5' later when Paul Mitchell netted his first goal of the season at 21:19 into the first half.
  • The score remained deadlocked for much of the second half until Utica's Thomas Muller scored the game-winning goal with less than 14' to go in regulation.
  • Junior keeper, Tyler Gaines (Hoosick Falls, NY) recorded 2 saves on 3 shots on goal in the first half for the Mustangs, while sophomore, Cody Welkley (North Rose, NY) posted 2 saves in the second half of play for Morrisville State in the loss.

The Mustangs return to North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play this weekend when they host Gallaudet at 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon.
