Box Score 2 MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Volleyball team opened their North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) slate yesterday at SUNY Cobleskill. After finishing 1-1 on Day 1, the Mustangs went 2-0 on Day 2.
The Mustangs cruised past the Fighting Tigers of Cobleskill in the first two sets of the first match by scores of 25-14 and 25-10, but weathered a close third set to pull out the 25-23 set win to take the match 3 sets to zero.
Strong serving and a balanced offensive attack was the key to the Mustangs first match victory as Morrisville once again tallied double digit aces. Megyan Merrill (Millport, N.Y.) made the most of her 23 attacks, posting a team high 10 kills in the match. Morrisville also received strong performances by Lindsey Sunderlage (Kingston, Ill.), Courtney LaVere (Oswego, N.Y.) and Caelan Marsh (Kingston, N.Y.) who posted 6, 5, and 4 kills respectively.
Despite a seemingly easy first match, the Mustangs found their backs against the wall when they faced the Wildcats from SUNY Poly. Morrisville dropped the first two sets by scores of 19-25 and 17-25 before rebounding to take a 25-22 win in the third set. At that point in the match, the Mustangs regained their stride and put Poly away 25-16 in the fourth set and 15-11 in the fifth set.
The efficiency of Morrisville's offense was the difference maker in the comeback win as they out-hit the Wildcats .111 to .064. The Mustangs also picked up three key solo blocks by LaVere, Sunderlage, and Elycia Crittenden (Louisville, Ky.).
The Mustangs' win against SUNY Poly marked the first time in program history that Morrisville has defeated the Wildcats.
Morrisville will have a week off before continuing their NEAC schedule on Saturday and Sunday, September 24 and 25. The Mustangs will hit the road for another Pool Play event squaring off against Bryn Athyn, St. Elizabeth and the host school, PSU-Abington.
