Box Score

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College men's ice hockey team secured a weekend sweep Saturday night of visiting Fredonia, downing the Blue Devils by a 4-2 final in Morrisville in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.

The win is the third straight for the Mustangs who improve their record to 7-8-5 overall, 5-5-2 in conference play. Fredonia drops to 4-10-5 overall, and remain winless in the SUNYAC with a 0-7-3 conference stint.

Four different Mustangs posted scores on the night, including John Doyle (New Lowell, Ontario) who notched the first for Morrisville State with 3:44 to go in the first period. Doyle found the back of the net on a rebound shot that came from Joseph Santino (Woodbridge, Ontario) off a Alex Huizenga (Grand Rapids, Mich.) feed.

Morrisville State carried the 1-0 lead into the second period before netting their second of the night, a deflection off the stick of senior Rob Molinaro (Yonkers, N.Y.) after the rifle of a shot from MJ Maerkl (Binghamton, N.Y.) from the top of the blue line. Darren Young (Woodstock, Ontario) was also credited with an assist on the goal as Morrisville State held the 2-0 lead after two periods of play.

In the third, Fredonia took advantage of an extra man opportunity and notched the power play score over the pad of Mustang net minder Steven Dombrosky (Elizabethtown, Pa.). Stephen Castriota put one up on the scoreboard for the Blue Devils, off a feed from Jared Wynia and Zach White, making it a 2-1 game just 1:28 into the final period.

The visitors evened the score at two midway through the period with an unassisted tally from Taylor Bourne, who found a way to get past Dombrosky for the goal with 11:27 to go.

Morrisville State regained the lead at 6:51 with a power play tip off the stick off Steve Dol (Ingersoll, Ontario) who was positioned inside circle and sent the puck over the glove of Fredonia goaltender Jeff Flagler for the go ahead tally. Maerkl and Young were credited with the assists on the score.

Santino secured the win for the Mustangs in the final minute of the contest, netting an empty net goal for the 4-2 Morrisville State win.

Dombrosky had 26 saves in the win for Morrisville State, turning away two in the final four minutes of the contest.

Flagler had 23 in the loss for the Blue Devils.

Morrisville State returns to the ice next Friday, traveling to Oswego State, who sits in second place overall in the SUNYAC. The weekend sweep moved the Mustangs from sixth place (a three way tie) to a tie for third in the conference standings.
