Mustang bats go cold in loss to Oneonta

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team dropped a pair of SUNYAC outings Saturday afternoon, battling cold and windy conditions as they fell in both games to visiting SUNY Oneonta on the Mustangs home field in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville softball battled cold and windy conditions Saturday afternoon after a delay, falling in SUNYAC action to visiting SUNY Oneonta by final scores of 10-6 and 18-2.
  • Oneonta held a 1-0 lead through three innings before Morrisville put two on the board in the bottom of the third to claim the 2-1 advantage.
  • Oneonta responded with five runs in the top of the fourth, adding a seventh score in the top of the fifth, before the Mustangs scored four more to cut the lead to one in the bottom of the frame.
  • The Red Dragons scored three times in the top of the seventh to open the gap to four runs, a lead that held on for the 10-6 league win.
  • J'Anne Colbow (Weyburn, Sask.) led off with a double to left center in the bottom of the third, before a single from Gracie Battles (Fulton, N.Y.) to right field saw Colbow put the first Mustang run on the board for the afternoon.
  • Two batters later, a ground out scored Battles, giving Morrisville the 2-1 lead.
  • Oneonta responded with a five run inning in the fourth, before limiting the Mustangs to three quick plate appearances in the bottom of the frame.
  • After posting a run in the top of the fifth, the Mustangs rallied for four of their own in the bottom of the inning with two outs showing in the Red Dragon favor.
  • Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) singled to short stop to score Maddy Krueger (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.), before Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) crossed home on a throwing error by the second baseman.
  • A single from Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.) to left field scored Brefka, and three batters later Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) shot one up the middle to send Madeline Brennan (Salisbury Hills, N.Y.) across home.
  • Brennan was running for Fish.
  • A quick sixth inning saw the Mustangs trail 7-6 heading into the seventh and final inning, but Oneonta would pull away with three more scores, two on errors, to earn the win.
  • Seven different Mustangs posted hits on the day, including Lafontaine who went 1-for-3 alongside Colbow and Battles.
  • Brefka added a 1-for-4 effort with two RBI's.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded the loss on the mound, throwing a complete game and collecting three strikeouts.
  • In the second of the day's action, Oneonta held a 6-2 lead before exploding for six runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings as they downed the Mustangs 18-2 after five.
  • Oneonta led off with a homer over the left field fence to claim a 1-0 lead after the top of the opening frame, before Brefka scored on a wild pitch to even the contest at one after the first.
  • In the top of the second, the visitors posted two two-run doubles to open the gap to 5-1 and forced the Mustangs to a quick three and out in the bottom of the frame.
  • Morrisville was able to counter Oneonta's run in the third with one of their own, a single from Brennan up middle that saw Lafontaine reach home on the error by the center fielder.
  • The Oneonta bats opened up in the fourth and fifth innings, with the Red Dragons posting six runs in each frame, en route to the win.
  • Brennan led Morrisville's effort from the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, recording an RBI, while Lafontaine, Brefka and Kaylor each went 1-for-2.
  • Battles recorded the loss on the mound, throwing 1.2 innings and allowing five earned runs while striking out one.
  • Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) also made an appearance for 2.1 frames, collecting a strikeout, before Hannah Decker (Kirkville, N.Y.) saw six batters.
  • Madeline Brennan finished out the contest on the mound for Morrisville, striking out one in the final .2 innings.
