Mustangs drop non-conference battle with Fighting Tigers

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team dropped a non-conference double-header Thursday afternoon to host SUNY Cobleskill at the All-Star Village in Oneonta.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville softball fell in non-conference action Thursday afternoon to host SUNY Cobleskill, at the All-Star Village in Oneonta.
  • Morrisville trailed 6-0 after three and rallied for a comeback attempt, pulling within one run after the top of the sixth, but the hosts scored in the bottom of the inning and held the Mustangs scoreless in the top of the seventh to collect the 7-5 win.
  • Trailing 6-0, Morrisville put one on the board in the top of the fourth on a double by Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.), driving in Maddy Krueger (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) who ran for Hannah Decker (Kirkville, N.Y.).
  • Decker reached base on a single to right field.
  • The Mustangs rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth, loading the bases before Decker posted her second single of the afternoon, recording three RBI's to make it a 6-4 ball game.
  • Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) reached on a single in the top of the sixth inning, stealing second, before Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) stepped to the plate to record the RBI and cut the Mustangs deficit to one run after the top of the sixth.
  • Cobleskill added a final run in the bottom of the inning, holding the Mustangs scoreless in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
  • Decker went 2-for-3 to lead Morrisville from the plate, recording three RBI's.
  • Fish added a 3-for-4 effort with an RBI, while Brefka also went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) recorded the loss on the mound, throwing 2.2 innings and allowing one earned run, while striking out one.
  • Gracie Battles (Fulton, N.Y.) threw the final 3.1 innings, allowing one earned run while striking out three.
  • In the nightcap, Morrisville held an 8-7 lead entering the bottom of the final inning, but the hosts rallied with a walk-off homer to capture the 11-8 win.
  • Morrisville held a 4-1 lead after the second inning, with Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) posting the three-run double, followed by a single from Lafontaine for the four run frame.
  • Morrisville added two runs to their lead in the top of the third, Fish recording a sacrifice fly, before Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) scored on a throwing error by the Cobleskill catcher.
  • Cobleskill snagged two back in the bottom of the third and added three to its total in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at six after four.
  • The Fighting Tigers took a one run lead in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • Morrisville tied the contest at seven runs with a double by Lafontaine to score Brefka, who reached base on balls.
  • J'Anne Colbow (Weyburn, Sask.) rifled a single shot to drive in Lafontaine, giving the Mustangs the 8-7 advantage after six innings.
  • Morrisville was held scoreless in the top of the seventh, and the hosts led off with a double in the bottom of the frame to kick off the final inning.
  • After tying the score at eight, Cobleskill recorded a walk-off three-run homer to collect the 11-8 victory.
  • Lafontaine went 3-for-4 for the Mustangs with two RBI's and a run scored, while Colbow added a 2-for-2 effort with an RBI and run.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded the loss, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing three earned runs, recording one strikeout, while Darling threw 3.0 innings, allowing four earned runs.
  • Morrisville recorded seven errors in the second of the double-header,

  • Morrisville will return to the field Sunday, traveling to Elmira College for a 12 p.m. double-header in Elmira.
