Mustangs Rally Falls Short as Utica Secures 13-8 win

UTICA, N.Y. – The Mustangs traveled to Utica University Saturday afternoon, where they battled through a physical, penalty-filled contest ultimately falling 13-8 to the Pioneers.

  • Records: Morrisville 3-1, Utica 3-2
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Morrisville struck early after conceding the game's first goal, as Deli Vega-Haley (Worcester, N.Y.) answered to even things at 1-1.
  • The teams traded momentum throughout the opening quarter, with Samantha Budney (Pine Bush, N.Y.) and Anyssia Ingersoll (Mexico, N.Y.) each finding the back of the net to keep the game tied at 3-3 after one.
  • Utica began to take control in the second, capitalizing on extra-player opportunities and turnovers.
  • Despite several saves from goalkeeper Aniyah Smith (Grovetown, Ga.), Utica used a late scoring run to build an 8-3 advantage heading into halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, the Mustangs showed fight with a quick three-goal burst cutting the deficit to 8-6.
  • Penalties would prove to be costly once again, as Utica converted multiple man-up chances to extend their lead to 10-6 late in the third.
  • In the final quarter, Morrisville continued to push, with Budney and Ingersoll adding goals, but Utica maintained control, closing out the game with three goals in the fourth to secure the 13-8 victory.
  • Ingersoll and Budney led the scoring effort for the Mustangs with two goals a piece while four other Mustangs followed with one tally each.
  • Smith anchored the defense in goal with 11 saves in 60 minutes of action while also recording a team-high six ground balls.
  • Ingersoll contributed heavily on defense as well, as she recorded four ground balls and caused four turnovers.
  • Utica was led in goal by Makayla Purdy, who recorded eight saves in the win, while Jessia Marciano and Maria Stuhlman led the offense with four goals each.

  • The Mustangs will travel to Oneonta this upcoming Wednesday, as they take on the Red Dragons in their first SUNYAC matchup of the season.
