Morrisville drops match with Westminster

CLERMONT, FLA. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team held a 2-1 lead after the first inning before visiting Westminster (MO) College got the bats rolling to collect a 18-5 victory after six innings Thursday afternoon in Clermont, Florida.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The SUNY Morrisville softball team dropped a six inning match Friday afternoon on the final day of spring break action in Clermont, Florida, to visiting Westminster (MO) College by a 18-5 finals core.
  • Westminster took an early 1-0 lead in the first after leading off with a triple down the left field line and following with a single up the middle.
  • Morrisville responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases before an error by the Westminster short stop allowed two runs for the 2-1 Mustang lead.
  • Westminster exploded for seven runs in the top of the ensuing inning and collected three quick outs in the bottom of the inning for the 8-2 lead after two.
  • After extending the lead to 11-2 in the top of the fourth, Morrisville was able to drive in two of their own in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases before Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) shot a double to right field to score Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) and Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) who reached on a walk and error earlier in the inning.
  • Westminster headed into the top of the sixth with a seven run lead, extending the gap to 14 as they reached home plate seven times in the frame.
  • Morrisville added a final run to their total with a sacrifice fly from Lafontaine, driving in Olivia Camacho (Barrigada, Guam) who led off the inning with a triple deep in right field.
  • J'Anne Colbow (Weyburn, Sask.) and Brennan each went 2-2 from the plate, Brennan adding two RBI's in the efforts from the plate.
  • Camacho went 1-for-1 with a run to record the fifth Mustang hit on the day.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded the loss, throwing 2.1 innings while striking out one and allowing 12 earned runs.
  • Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) was on the mound for 3.2 innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out one.

  • Morrisville will wrap up spring break action with a nightcap against Ripon College at 4 p.m. in Clermont.
