First inning setback leads to 5-0 Mustang loss

CLERMONT, FLA. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team suffered a 5-0 setback Thursday afternoon to the University of New England, after allowing four first inning runs in the third day of spring break action in Clermont, Florida.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The SUNY Morrisville softball team dropped a 5-0 decision to the University of New England Thursday afternoon in Clermont, Florida on the third day of spring break training.
  • UNE held Morrisville scoreless in the opening inning, before taking advantage of an early bottom of the first error to open the game's scoring.
  • UNE loaded the bases and reached home three additional times to claim the 4-0 lead after one over the Mustangs.
  • After a quick second inning, Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) collected her second hit of the day, singling to left center, and reaching second on the ensuing at bat, but the UNE defense posted the third out to send the game into the bottom of the inning.
  • UNE increased their lead to five with a second Mustang error that saw another cross home plate.
  • Morrisville's defense held UNE scoreless in the fourth, and despite an attempt to put together a rally across the remainder of the game, the Mustangs were kept off the board as UNE posted the win.
  • Lafontaine finished 2-for-3 from the plate to lead the Mustangs, with the third Morrisville hit coming off the bat of Maddy Krueger (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.), who finished 1-for-1 on the day.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded the loss on the mound, starting the contest and allowing four earned runs before Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) threw the remainder of the game, collecting two strikeouts and allowing one earned run.
