Augsburg outlasts Morrisville in extra innings to capture win

CLERMONT, FLA. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team battled through extra innings Tuesday morning, but fell short as the Augsburg Aggies rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth to capture the 17-12 win in Clermont, Florida.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The SUNY Morrisville softball team battled through nine-innings Tuesday morning against Augsburg College, but fell short as the Aggies rallied for five runs in the top of the final frame to capture the 17-12 win on day two of spring break action in Clermont, Florida.
  • Morrisville held a 6-4 lead until a five run rally in the top of the fourth and were held scoreless as Augsburg took the 9-6 lead after four.
  • Morrisville was able to get three back in the bottom of the fifth before both squads traded scores to force the extra innings.
  • Augsburg held a one-run lead entering the bottom of the seventh, but lead off batter Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) blasted a triple to center field to move into scoring position.
  • A single by Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) scored Lafontaine, evening the score at 11 and sending the game into the eighth.
  • The Aggies regained the one-run advantage in the top of the eighth with a single to short to score the runner placed on second, but Morrisville countered once again in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice hit to short to score the base runner and force a ninth frame.
  • Augsburg took advantage of an error on Morrisville and had two on base, before rifling a homer over the right field fence to go ahead 15-12.
  • Three batters later, the Aggies sent another over the center field fence, scoring two and widening the gap to five runs.
  • Morrisville was able to move a runner into scoring position late in the bottom of the inning, but the Augsburg defense prevented any scoring to capture the extra inning win.
  • Five Mustangs recorded two hits apiece on the day, including Brennan who led Morrisville with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
  • Lafontaine also recorded two hits, going 2-for-4, while scoring four times, with Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.) adding two hits to go along with a run and three RBI's.
  • Madeline Brennan (Salisbury Hills, N.Y.) also collected two hits, scoring three times, with left fielder J'Anne Colbow (Weyburn, Sask.) adding two of her own, including a triple, while scoring twice and adding an RBI.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) threw the opening three innings for the Mustangs, allowing six earned runs and striking out two before being replaced by Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) for the remaining six.
  • Darling threw two strikeouts and allowed seven earned runs in 34 batters faced, recording the loss.

  • Morrisville will face the University of Wisconsin-Stout in the second of the day's action.
