Fourth quarter escapes Morrisville football in battle with Alfred State

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting Alfred State College football scored twice in the fourth quarter and posted 508 yards total offense in Saturday afternoon's Empire 8 action in Morrisville, downing the host Mustangs by a 33-21 final score on Drake Field in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville football was unable to stop visiting Alfred State College from scoring twice in the fourth quarter of Saturday afternoon's Empire 8 battle in Morrisville, dropping the 33-21 league decision to the Pioneers on Drake Field.
  • The loss is the second for the Mustangs in Empire 8 action to date on the season.
  • Alfred State powered their way to a 508-yard total offensive gain on the afternoon, including a 387-yard claim in the running game fueled by 190-net yards from running back Xzavier Patrick.
  • Quarterback Chase Shepanski added another 148 net yards on 27 carries, also connecting on 15-of-27 passes for 121 yards and two touchdown scores, including five to wide out Jordan Jackson for 52 yards.
  • Morrisville collected 160 net yards rushing on the day, 69 from Isaac Sylvain (Schenectady, N.Y.) who collected two touchdowns on seven carries.
  • Jalyn Jacques (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) added another 58 yards on seven attempts, while William Forte (Brooklyn, N.Y.) gained 28 on the ground, while throwing for another 56 as he completed 7-of-20 passes.
  • Trevor Maly and Chris Bergman each posted seven tackles in the defensive game for the Pioneers.
  • Morrisville's defense registered three take-aways on the day, with Israel Baker (Troy, N.Y.) recording a fumble recovery and interception to go along with nine tackles.
  • Bruce Wingate (Liverpool, N.Y.) had a team high 16 stops, with eight coming from Carter Archibald (Bronx, N.Y.) and Anthony Sciallo (Penn Yan, N.Y.) each.
  • Bran'Dale Lester (Rochester, N.Y.) also recorded an interception, contributing five tackles to the defensive efforts.
  • Alfred State was first to post points on the board after a scoreless back-and-forth battle through the opening quarter.
  • Patrick capped off a 61-yard drive for the Pioneers at 11:54 in the second for the 6-0 lead before Shepanski added to the visitors lead with his one-yard quarterback sneak into the endzone and 13-0 advantage with 5:56 to go.
  • Morrisville cut the lead to one score late in the quarter, utilizing the blocking of the offensive line to put together a 60-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a four-yard run by Forte through the middle.
  • Morrisville's momentum carried into the third quarter as Baker intercepted Shepanski and returned the ball 13-yards to midfield, setting up the Mustangs scoring effort.
  • Using the quick foot of Jacques, Morrisville moved the ball deep into Alfred State territory and saw Sylvain scamper into the endzone, recovering his own fumble, for the score, giving the hosts the 14-13 advantage.
  • Just 16 seconds later, the Mustangs widened their gap to 21-13, recovering the muffed punt return by Patrick on the Alfred State 26.
  • Sylvain broke three tackles as he pounded the ball up center, finding the endzone on the one-play drive.
  • Alfred State got a score back on the ensuing drive, as Shepanski completed the slant pass to Jordan for the 16-yard score with 1:40 showing in the third, making it a 21-19 ball game in favor of the hosts.
  • The Pioneers forced Morrisville to a quick three-and-out series on the next drive, posting the go ahead score that carried over into the fourth quarter, with Shepanski completing the short middle strike to Liam Rogers for the five-yard passing score.
  • Morrisville was unable to find the endzone to counter and Alfred added a final score, a 46-yard rush up middle by Patrick, en route to the win.

  • Morrisville returns to their home field next Saturday, hosting Utica University at 12 PM on Drake Field.
