Morrisville suffers heartbreaking loss on opening day

UNION, N.J. – Visiting SUNY Morrisville football dropped a heartbreaking loss on opening day to host Kean University, by a 17-14 final score in Union, New Jersey.
THE BASICS:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville football opened the 2025 season on the road at Kean University, falling 17-14 on a last second field goal that gave the Cougars the win in Union for the first time in four meetings with the Mustangs.
  • Morrisville outgained the hosts 360-yards total offense to the Cougars 271, including a 216-yard effort on the ground, but penalties proved costly for the Mustangs providing Kean with the chance to claim the win in the closing seconds.
  • Morrisville put the first numbers up on the scoreboard with 49 seconds to go in the opening quarter, with Isaac Sylvain (Schenectady, N.Y.) capping off a 15-play, 75-yard drive for the visitors with a one-yard push up center for the score.
  • Ryan Fish (Ithaca, N.Y.) completed the point after to give Morrisville the 7-0 advantage.
  • Kean responded with 3:40 to go in the second with a catch in the back of the end zone to even the game at seven.
  • Following more than a two hour delay due to lightning and weather in the Union area, both teams resumed play with just over two minutes to go in the second and headed in the shortened halftime period knotted at seven.
  • With Kean threatening to score early in the third, Morrisville's Zavion Daniels (West Hempstead, N.Y.) picked off Cougar quarterback Rocco Pellegrini to register a second interception by the Mustangs defense, returning possession to the visitors within home territory.
  • Daniels' interception return set the Mustangs up for a quick 36-yard scoring drive in just three plays that was capped off by Sylvain's scramble up center for 14 yards and a 14-7 lead.
  • Kean held Morrisville to limited yardage on their next drive and forced the Mustangs to punt, but the hosts found a hole along the sideline and returned the kick 60-yards for the touchdown score, evening the game at 14.
  • Morrisville had one last drive attempt midway through the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs were forced to punt, returning possession to the hosts.
  • Kean began the drive on their own 12-yard line and with a couple of short passing strikes moved the ball into Morrisville territory.
  • The Cougars put the ball on the ground and moved within a yard of the red zone with 26 ticks remaining on the clock,
  • A late flag proved costly for the Mustangs, as the pass interference call moved the ball inside the 20 and a play later, Kean claimed the win with a 26-yard field goal as time expired.
  • Morrisville quarterback Christopher Stancarone (Levittown, N.Y.) completed 16-of-35 passes for 144 yards and adding 46 net yards on the ground in the rushing game.
  • Sylvain posted a net 120 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns for the Mustangs, with another 46 net yards coming from Sean Perrin (Wallkill, N.Y.) on 10 carries.
  • Mason Ondreyko (Wallkill, N.Y.) registered 10 catches for 107 yards for Morrisville's receiving unit.
  • Defensively, Dillon English (Webster, N.Y.) and Camerin Camacho (Cape Coral, Fla.) recorded double digit tackles, English leading the way with 12 and Camacho with 10, with another eight coming from senior Elijah Rawleigh (Watertown, N.Y.).
  • DeSean Bruce (Geneva, N.Y.) added an interception to the defensive efforts.
  • Pellegrino threw for 114 yards on 18-of-26 completions for Kean, with Aly Marzouk recording a team high 58 net yards rushing on 12 carries.
  • Justin Leigh had 67 yards on nine receptions, with another 58 coming from Christian Bujno on four catches.
  • Rodney Acquah had 11 tackles for the Cougars defense, while teammates Jesse Wilfong and Alex Dekis each added 10.

  • Morrisville will host University of Rochester next Saturday in their home opener, kicking off at noon on Drake Field in Morrisville.
