Second half gets away from Morrisville football

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting University of Rochester scored 20 unanswered points in the second half of Saturday's home opener for the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs football squad, capturing the 30-14 victory on Drake Field in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville football led 14-10 at the half, before visiting University of Rochester scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to claim the 30-14 win on Drake Field in Morrisville on Mustang Weekend.
  • Rochester put the first score on the board midway through the opening quarter, stepping in front of a Christopher Stancarone (Levittown, N.Y.) pass and returning the ball 25 yards for the defensive score.
  • Morrisville responded with a scoring one-yard run from Isaac Sylvain (Schenectady, N.Y.) to cap off the 10-play, 72-yard drive and even the ball game at seven.
  • Morrisville capitalized on the quickness of Sylvain late in the second with his second rushing score of the afternoon, a two-yard leap over center to complete the 75-yard drive and give the Mustangs the 14-7 advantage.
  • Rochester put three additional points on the board before the half, hitting the 35-yard field goal with 18 seconds remaining.
  • Rochester capitalized off the Mustangs second turnover of the game, competing the nine-yard pass for the touchdown score after beginning the drive on the Morrisville four-yard line, claiming the lead for the first time since the opening quarter.
  • Once again in the fourth, Rochester's defense came up big with a third interception of the day, setting up the offense for a four play, 42-yard scoring drive and 24-14 lead.
  • Rochester added one final score to their totals to seal the win, a 35-yard pass play into the right corner of the end zone.
  • Morrisville outgained Rochester in yards rushing, netting 222 across the afternoon to the Yellowjackets 162, but struggled in the passing game, as Stancarone completed 9-of-24 passes for 43 yards.
  • Sylvain finished the day with 21 carries for 122 yards rushing and two scores, averaging 5.8 yards per carry, while adding two catches for seven yards to his totals.
  • Stancarone added 51 yards on the ground.
  • Rochester's Cole Raux registered 91 net yards in the contest on the ground, while Jeff Genovese added 45.
  • Genovese also went 4-for-4 in passing for 32 yards, with Victor Moran adding another 6-for-9 performance in passing for 83-yards and three touchdown scores.
  • Aidan Papantonis was the main target for the Yellowjackets, reining in 10 for 102 yards and two scores.
  • Dillon English (Webster, N.Y.) led the Mustang defensive efforts with 15 total tackles, while DeSean Bruce (Geneva, N.Y.) collected another nine.
  • Nathan Lehigh had nine stops to lead Rochester.

  • Morrisville returns to the field next Saturday, traveling to Union College for a 1 p.m. non-conference bout before opening Empire 8 action on the Mustangs home field the following week against Cortland.
