Morrisville drops two to league leading Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team resumed league action Friday, falling on the road in double-header play to SUNYAC opponent SUNY Cortland by final scores of 11-1, and 14-1 in five innings apiece.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville softball dropped the SUNYAC double-header Friday afternoon on the road at league leading Cortland, falling in five innings in each game at Dragon Field in Cortland.
  • In game one of the day, Morrisville plated the first run in the top of the first inning and staved off the Red Dragons until the bottom of the fifth.
  • Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) shot a single to left field, to score Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) who led off with a single up middle.
  • Cortland would get one back in the bottom of the second before taking advantage of a throwing error that saw two cross home plate to add to their lead.
  • Morrisville trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth, where the Red Dragons opened the lead to 11-1, claiming the win after posting three outs in four at bats in the top of the fifth.
  • Lafontaine finished the first of the day's action going 2-for-3 from the plate, while Brennan and Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) each went 1-for-2.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) threw 3.2 innings in the loss, striking out one while allowing five earned runs.
  • Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) finished out the final out of the contest for the Mustangs, facing two batters.
  • In the nightcap, Cortland posted a 6-0 lead after the second inning and didn't look back as the Mustangs fell 14-1.
  • Morrisville's lone score came in the top of the fourth inning with Brennan leading off with a single to right field.
  • Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.) found a hole in right center to advance Brennan to third, before Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.) had the sacrifice fly to center to send the sophomore across home plate for the Mustangs score.
  • Fish went 1-for-1 from the plate for Morrisville with the RBI, alongside Brefka, while Gaskins, Lafontaine and Brennan each went 1-for-2 in their efforts.
  • Darling recorded the loss for Morrisville, throwing one complete inning and striking out one, before Kaylor appeared for the next two.
  • Celeste Baldwin (Bainbridge, N.Y.) finished out the contest on the mound.

  • Morrisville will return to the field Monday, hosting Elmira College in a rescheduled double-header in Morrisville.
