Morrisville bats roll in double-header sweep of Canton

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team hosted visiting SUNY Canton at Carrier Park in East Syracuse Monday afternoon, posting a total 29 hits as they swept the Roos in double-header SUNYAC action with final scores of 10-2 (6 innings) and 8-1.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville softball recorded a total 29 hits across double-header action Monday afternoon as they swept the visiting SUNY Canton Roos to collect their first SUNYAC wins of the season, registering the 10-2 and 8-1 victories at Carrier Park in East Syracuse.
  • Morrisville posted 17 total hits in the first of the day's double, with sophomore Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) throwing the win.
  • Morrisville took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, as Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) drove a single through the middle of the infield to score two, including Kaylor who reached on a double slam off the left field fence.
  • Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.) followed with another hit for the Mustangs up middle, scoring Lafontaine for the 3-0 advantage.
  • Morrisville added another run to their total with a single shot over center fence from Kaylor, her first home run of the season.
  • The Mustangs allowed two runs in the top of the fifth before exploding for five in the bottom of the inning, leading off the inning with a double to right center from Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.).
  • Abbie Platt followed with a double down the left line to score Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.) who was pitch running for Gaskins, before Platt stole third and advanced to home on a single shot by Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) through second.
  • With bases loaded, Brefka scored on a wild pitch, before Sawitzki reached base on balls, loading the bases for a second time.
  • Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) blasted a single to right field to score two, opening the gap to 9-2 in favor of the Mustangs.
  • Three straight strikeouts by Kaylor sent Morrisville into the bottom of the sixth where they put the game away as Lafontaine posted the walk off single up the middle to score Platt who reached on a single to third early in the inning.
  • Kaylor pulled her record on the mound even at four, posting 10 total strikeouts across six innings.
  • Lafontaine went a perfect 5-for-5 form the plate, recording three total RBI's and two runs scored.
  • Brefka added a 3-for-4 effort, registering an RBI and two runs scored, while Platt and Kaylor each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI apiece.
  • In the nightcap, Kendall Darling (Lacona, N.Y.) recorded her first collegiate win as a Mustang, throwing a complete game as she registered eight total strikeouts in the 8-1 victory.
  • Morrisville jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, adding four in the third to open the lead to 7-0, before adding one more while limiting the Roos to just one run across the afternoon.
  • Morrisville posted 12 hits across the second of the day, including a double from Sawitzki down the right field line.
  • Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) added a single to short, plating Sawitzki, before Brennan shot a double to right center to score Kendrick.
  • Gaskins followed with a third double of the inning for the Mustangs, a shot to center field that sent Brennan across home plate for the 3-0 lead.
  • Morrisville added to their total in the bottom of the third, plating four more to open the gap to 7-0.
  • Kendrick placed a bunt towards first, scoring Sawitzki, before Brennan doubled to right field to send Kendrick across home.
  • An error by Canton found Morrisville adding another to their total as Platt recorded the RBI, before Celeste Baldwin (Bainbridge, N.Y.) sent a double to left field to send Platt back to the dugout after the scoring run.
  • Canton was able to put one on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, scoring on an error, but Morrisville got that back in the bottom of the fifth with a lead off single by Kendrick, who took advantage of a Roo throwing error and scored to regain the seven run lead.
  • Morrisville's defense limited Canton across the final two innings, as Darling threw two strikeouts, while the Mustangs prevented the Roos from reaching base.
  • Kendrick and Brennan each went 3-for-3 at the plate in the outing, registering two RBI's a piece, while combining for five total runs.
  • Brefka was 2-for-3, alongside a 1-for-2 effort from Baldwin, who posted an RBI.
  • Gaskins finished 1-for-3 with two RBI's.

  • Morrisville is tentatively scheduled for a double-header against Cobleskill on Wednesday, weather pending.
