Fifth inning leads Morrisville past Penn St. Schuylkill, 6-3

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – SUNY Morrisville softball scored three runs to pull away from Penn St. Schuylkill Friday morning, earning the 6-3 win on their final day of spring break contests in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The SUNY Morrisville softball team picked up a 6-3 win Friday morning as they scored three times in the top of the fifth to get past Penn St. Schuylkill on their final day of action in Myrtle Beach.
  • Schuylkill took the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second before the Mustangs responded, plating three of their own in the top of the third to even the contest.
  • Abbie Platt (Oneonta, N.Y.) led off with a single to short stop, stealing second, before advancing on a single shot to third by Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.).
  • Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) rifled a shot to left center to score Platt, before Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.) slapped a grounder to second, scoring both Lafontaine and Fish to even the score at three runs apiece.
  • Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) led off the top of the fifth with a single to left field, stealing second and landing on third after a fly out by Fish on the ensuing at bat.
  • Lafontaine sent Kendrick home on a fielders choice, before being batted in by Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) who placed one in left field for the RBI.
  • Later in the inning, Celeste Baldwin (Bainbridge, N.Y.) singled to left field, registering the RBI as Damani Miranda (Bronx, N.Y.) crossed home after pitch running for Kaylor, giving Morrisville the 6-3 lead.
  • In attempt to rally in the bottom of the six, Penn State loaded the bases, with one out, but Baldwin recorded a strike out and Lafontaine a put out in center field to keep the Lions off the board.
  • Schuylkill held Morrisville scoreless in the top of the seventh, and looked to put together a rally in the bottom of the final inning, but Baldwin retired all three batters en route to a game total five strikeouts for the win.
  • Kaylor appeared on the mound in the first four innings in the contest, collecting two strikeouts, before Baldwin relieved the sophomore in the final three.
  • Brennan led the Mustangs at the plate, collecting three hits on four at bats, while Platt went 2-for-3 with a run.
  • Lafontaine and Sawitzki each tallied two RBI's in their effort from the plate, while Kaylor also added one on a 1-for-2 effort in batting.

  • Morrisville will return to the field at 11 against Penn St. Abington for the final of the spring break training trip in Myrtle Beach.
