Morrisville bats edge Coast Guard in 3-2 thriller

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – SUNY Morrisville softball rallied for the go ahead run in the top of the seventh inning in Thursday morning's outing against the US Coast Guard Academy in Myrtle Beach, posting the thrilling 3-2 win in spring break action.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • SUNY Morrisville softball posted a thrilling 3-2 victory over the US Coast Guard Academy Thursday morning, recording the go ahead run in the top of the seventh to earn the win.
  • Morrisville took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second as senior catcher Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.) shot a single to center field to plate two Mustang runs.
  • Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single up middle and advanced following a second straight single from Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) to right field.
  • Loading the bases with a walk, Sawitzki's hit sent Gaskins and Kendrick across home plate for the 2-0 advantage.
  • Morrisville held on to the two-run lead until a Coast Guard rally in the bottom of the sixth inning tied the contest at two entering the final frame.
  • Lindsey Fish (Freeville, N.Y.) led off with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a passed ball, before Emery reached on an error, sending Fish across the plate for the go ahead score.
  • The Bears were quick to load the bases in the bottom of the inning, registering three straight hits, before the Mustangs defense took over and left all three runners on base.
  • The Coast Guard hit a short pop up in an attempt to advance runners, but Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) was able to secure the put out, following with a Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) strike out on the mound.
  • Facing bases loaded and a full count, the Bears rifled one to right field, but Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) snagged the ball out of the air to secure the win.
  • Sawitzki put together a 2-for-3 performance from the plate for the Mustangs, registering two RBI's.
  • Fish also collected a multi-hit outing, going 2-for-4, with Kendrick recording a 1-for-2 effort from the plate.
  • Kaylor threw the win for the Mustangs, allowing one earned run and striking out five batters across the contest.

  • Morrisville will return to the field this afternoon, playing Gwynedd Mercy University at 3 p.m.
