Third period downs Mustangs in loss to #9 Cortland

Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Morrisville women's ice hockey entered the third period trailing no. 9 nationally ranked SUNY Cortland, but were unable to stall the Red Dragons as the hosts collected the 5-2 SUNYAC win Tuesday night in Cortland.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville women's hockey dropped a 5-2 SUNYAC decision to no. 9 nationally ranked Cortland Tuesday night, as the Red Dragons put the contest away in the third with two final period scores.
  • Morrisville was able to hold off the Red Dragons until the middle of the opening period when the hosts netted an unassisted score and added a second tally minutes later to carry a 2-0 advantage into the first intermission break.
  • Cortland extended their lead to 3-0 in the opening minute of play and staved off the Mustangs until the 8:41 mark when Bailey McMaster (Regina, Sask.) collected the power play score to put the visitors on the board.
  • Hailee Easson (Okotoks, Alta.) and Allie Davidson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) were credited with the assists.
  • Minutes later, defenseman Kate Mabey (Guelph, Ont.) rifled a second Mustang score into the back of the net, cutting the Cortland lead to one as they headed into the locker room trailing 3-2 after two periods.
  • Zoe Leas (North Vancouver, B.C.) and McMaster earned the assists on the tally.
  • Cortland regained their two-goal lead just over two minutes in for the 4-2 advantage and secured the SUNYAC win at the 13:40 mark with a fifth tally to put the game out of reach for the Mustangs.
  • Sydney Canham (Rochester, N.Y.) turned aside 34 in the efforts in net in the loss for Morrisville, posting double-digit saves in each the first and third periods of play.
  • Molly Goergen earned the win with her 17 total stops, while five different teammates posted goals, including Drew Kopek and Kate Diem who notched one and added an assist, apiece.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will be on the road for the next two weekends, traveling to Buffalo State this week for a Friday/Saturday league battle, before heading to Oswego the following weekend for a double.
